Janis Joplin - Me and Bobby McGee -

Her genre was really folk rock, but "Melody Maker" said this contralto had the best voice in British Rock/pop. Amazing range-this first song only has a small part from her but it shows some of her range. One of the most powerful anti war songs ever made. The second is half Maddy Prior and half instrumental

Man, Turtle, we may not see eye to eye on firearms but your taste in music is spot on from my point of view. Steeleye Span was one of my favorite folk-rock bands and Maddy Prior was one of my top three favorite female vocalists from that period and genre. I saw the band in concert in Bristol in 1973 and in Cardiff a few moths later. One of the few bands which sounded better live than from studio work. The others top female vocalists were June Tabor who actually sang with Maddy Prior when they formed a duet team called the Silly Sisters. The other was the lead singer of a British progressive rock group called Renaissance who sang like an angel. Her name is Annie Haslam.

My favorite song from Steeleye Span was their cover of "New York Girls". They somehow got the famed British actor Peter Sellers to play ukulele and sing background vocals on the song and he goes over the top.

Cheers.

I never got a chance to see them. They were supposed to come to Cornell's famed Barton Hall when I was on the East Coast but they didn't. I listed Annie Haslam's Carpet of the Sun one of my favorites. Another was the late great Sandy Denny's duet with Plant on the Battle for Evermore"

and here is one of Sandy's more famous works with Richard Thompson and FC.

Thats AnnMArie Millazo. She is a powerhouse vocalist and was the female lead for the East Village Opera Company. She also writes Broadway musicals and fronted Cherry. If you havent listened to EVOC...you should.

I dont know if she was the ABSOLUTE best...but at least top 3 of all time...Ann Wilson.
