From CBS News:

Dr. John, New Orleans' legendary six-time Grammy Award winning pianist, performer and 2011 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, has died, his family said. He was 77. Please count me as another one of Dr. John's fans!

4,3,2,1

I was sitting in the pub, singing along to "Right Place, Wrong Time", then another song came on...then I saw that Dr. John died. Damn.

I have a friend whose father opened for him here in Phoenix in '74, then, next year, Dr. John was opening for my friend's father.

Whenever I think of Dr. John, I think about his music of course, but when I think about when he was on the long 3 part story of "Polynesiatown" on SCTV, I just smile. He sings twice, eats all the ribs in the join't, in between some great work by John Candy.

One of those singers that I just assumed was black before I saw a picture of him. Was very talented.

I am extremely irritated that I can't find the live video from the 1995 SRV Tribute because I love Dr. John's "and Frankie Lee Sims" line. But you can see him on the far left of the album cover. :(

This is sad news. When we lose someone like Dr John, we not only lose the link to his concurrent past, but the link to the past before him. Because he is one of those musicians that drew heavily on the rich musical heritage before him. He might not carry the historical gravitas as Satchmo; but he very much carried his soul within.

That's quite a cast!
