Then at least the art would've stood up on it's own instead of being tainted to make it more accessible.

When you read a book you earn the story.
You ought to treat the book and the tv show as separate works- they have deviated so much from the source material its pretty much different.

Anyway, GRRM sort of wrote himself into a corner. He put up too many characters, each with their own backstories its become pretty much too complex and unworkable for him to finish. Also the pressure of producing high quality work must be getting to him.

Update: George R. R. Martin Says Game of Thrones Would Have to Run "Another Five Seasons" to Be Faithful to the Books - IGN

During an interview with 60 Minutes, he said that the show, created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, “would have to run another five seasons” for it to be completely faithful to the story he has lined up for the final books in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring.

The show will be very close, though, thanks to “several days of story conferences” that took place at Martin’s house in Santa Fe, New Mexico. “I don't think Dan and Dave's ending is gonna be that different from my ending because of the conversations we did have,” he said.
I like the whole, "it would need 5 more seasons" sort of thing to be faithful. Yeah, 5 more seasons and at least 6 years between each season, lol.

I started reading the books a long, long time ago and have become completely annoyed at how long it takes him to get books out. Maybe....maybe we'd see Winds of Winter this year, but there's also Dream of Spring to conclude the series and I don't want to wait another 8 years for that book.

And Patrick Rothfuss apparently is following in Martin's footsteps and won't release book 3 of the Kingslayer Chronicles. I don't know when this whole "I don't need to publish books" trend started, but it's annoying.

But I will say that if you like world building stories and fantasy, check out the Stormlight Archive series by Brandon Sanderson. It's an ambitious project for sure. There are 3 books out now, they are big. There's 3 books out now, and Sanderson said he's dedicating his 2019 to writing the 4th. Apparently it takes him ~16 months to write one of these books. But it's a good series, and even though there are a few years between books, he's well more consistent with writing than Martin or Rothfuss. Sanderson also writes the Mistborn series which is really good as well. I appreciate an author who publishes on a regular schedule.

I'm with you. GRRM has really not treated his original fans, or his literary legacy, very well at all.

Great, I enjoyed those as well. I hope that trend stops, but I don't know why it would. We have 5 issue comic books going direct to film nowadays. Fastest path to getting paid, I suppose. The art is seen as an impediment, more than anything.

I'm all caught up with these as well, though I didn't like them quite as much as GoT or Kingslayer.

If you haven't already tried it, I'll toss out "The First Law" trilogy by Joe Abercrombie as a great read. Definitely left me wanting more, and plays with your expectations like nothing I've read since GoT. Must not be greedy, as he could have made 10 books out of it, but walked away when the story was told.

The first episode was pretty good. The long hiatus and resultant anticipation probably made me feel a teeny, tiny bit disappointed.
A few things I'm looking forward to: Arya's quest to kill Cersei, The Mountain vs The Hound, how Danaerys reacts when she finds out Jon Snow is the rightful heir to the Iron Throne. Snow doesn't really want the throne.

Yea! the anticipation made it a bit anticlimactic, but I still enjoyed it.

I didn't like that last season and this season they crammed events into six episodes each. And while E1 was fine, I am not going to enjoy the final season as long as the duck lipped arrogant Daenery's has a prospect to win the crown.

I don't know if the author's intentions were to make her likable, but if there is anyone due some justice it is that twit. While every major character has suffered this "good queen" has had nothing but self-righteous murdering authoritarian for "regime change" for her since her brother's early demise.

Oddly, after Cerci's experience with the High Sparrow I've actually grown to like her. At least she has suffered: three dead children, a dead father, and two brothers that (in her view) have been the cause of her families destruction.

There are several endings that might please me, assuming the army of dead don't win:

Jon Snow survives and the Iron Throne is abolished. Daenery and her dragons are all dead.

Sansa Stark takes the Iron Throne. Jon Snow survives or at worst dies with the Dragon queen.

Bran, should he survive, gets a real job.

Samwell Tarley sits on the Iron Throne, banishing you know who back to where she came from.

Most likely end? The dragon queen on the throne, Jon Snow, Cerci, dead. The imp plotting with Sansa to get rid of their new queen, and Brazo's foreclosing on a bankrupt throne.

Re: NO spoilers - look at final GAME OF THRONES season

The later seasons got a bit silly, with characters doing stupid things to move the story.

We're still watching it, but to me it's always felt rather contrived and surface-deep. And of course there's the unpleasant habit of entire people or armies I didn't hear anything about appearing out of nowhere to make a plot point (or, perhaps, were mentioned one time mid-conversation seasons ago). It's entertaining, but to me it just doesn't feel genuine and internally consistent - a believable alternate reality - in the way that Tolkien does.

Then again....this is a TV adaptation.
