Now something interesting just happened, the new trailer for Aladdin just dropped and it’s getting downvoted pretty hard.

I can only assume it’s because well... It doesn’t look good, perhaps the final result will be a little better but to my eyes it looks pretty cheap and Will Smith just looks bizarre as the Genie, it’s almost like a 3rd party medium budget adaptation, what are your thoughts?

He looks like a "Avatar" extra......but I'll reserve judgement until I see the film.

Somebody insisted the Genie be blue. Like the previous cartoon. Blue does not work on Will, at all. I have no fashion sense whatsoever and figured that one out.

Visually, that looks horrible. Like it is an intentional spoof or something. And I know that isn't the case. Will Smith has a great voice for the part and his voice is distinctive enough that we will all know who it is. Make the Genie look like...the Genie.

The kids are going to love it. My grandkids were mesmerized.

Will Smith aside, I expected Jafar to be more sinister. Aladdin is probably in my top three favorite animated Disney movies and I just feel disappointed. But I'll probably still go see it.

Right? Jafar is supposed to be this over-the-top villain. His actor is soooooooo bland and boring. I'm not going to go see this. It just looks so bad, and Disney needs to stop ****ing remaking their classics and ruining them.

A couple of the first ones, like Alice in Wonderland, Jungle Book, or Cinderella weren't terrible but I don't know it's just going downhill it seems. I can get they wanted to go with the good looking Jafar but he was quite sinister and I am not getting that vibe at all. Also, shouldn't he have disguised himself as the old man like in the old movie because when he goes to the palace Aladdin's going to figure out the bad dude right away, right?

Yeah. They might be trying to remix it a little, but I don't like it.

I would watch if it were anybody but Will Smith.

To say I am not a fan of his is an understatement.

Shame, too, as that new Jafar is smokin'.

I could care less if the Genie is blue or not.

I won't see it in a theater for sure simply because I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone thought Will Smith should be the Genie.

Will Smith?

Really?

Nope. Wouldn't pay a plug nickel to see this mess.

They really should just cancel the movie right now and avoid the hit to the studio's repretation.

I liked Will Smith in MIB, ID, Enemy of the State, and hell, even Wild, Wild West, but he's since dropped off a cliff. I'm not confident that he's be able to fill Robin Williams' shoes. Also, that looks ****ing aweful. Hell, the whole premise of a live-action adaptation of a Disney animated feature is worthless on it's face.

No one can fill Robin Williams' shoes ... er ... lamp?

dropped off a cliff since Wild Wild West? He's been nominated for two Oscars since the movies you listed lol

Yesterday afternoon, some of the grandkids sat down together to read the original from an old illustrated leather bound copy of I have of A Thousand and One Arabian Nights. The genie was described as having "skin the color of a dark blue stormy day." The accompanying illustration shows a blue similar to this movie clip, a bit darker. The edition is a British imprint from 1921, not sure when it was printed, but the illustrations are outstanding, bursting off the pages with deep and bold colors, very art deco styling.

I used to have a minor regard for his talents, but WILD WILD WEST, I AM LEGEND and SUICIDE SQUAD soured me on him.

I predict this film is going to bomb, not just underperform but flat out fail at the box office.

Disney got greedy: it got away with a live action remake of busty and the beast, but they kept going making more remakes because they thought they could ride the waves of nostalgia.

An aladdin remake? No. No amount of nostalgia for the previous film will make people like the remake, in fact nostalgia will be what destroy’s this remake. Will Smith is a decent enough actor, but he This May be his worst casting choice since turning down the part of Neo in the matrix to instead star in Wild Wild West.

This film cannot succeed as a live action remake because of the character of Genie is best suited to animation. Robin william’s performance in the original film is a goddamn classic, and the magical hijinks was best captured by animated film. The live action remake will fail because will smith cannot play the same role that robin william’s made iconic.

Yeah, he's another one that is the same in everything he plays in.

Give me somebody good. Somebody with a wealth of talent, that can play any role given to him.

Johnny Depp. Gary Oldman. Somebody. Anybody.

Not saying that these guys would do well as the Genie, but at least they can act their way out of a paper bag.

Same place as the non-existent "blackwashing" of a character who technically ought to be Arabic.

Have you read the original? The genie has a Moorish appearance. From the story "immense, a bottom half of smoke and haze, with the hair and belly of a Black Pasha, and the stormy blue skin of a cadaver of those people." The Moors were known for painting their dead, blue. In the movie Thief of Bagdad from 1942, Rex Ingram, an American Black Actor who made his bones in the first Tarzan movie starring Elmo Lincoln, a silent, played the genie. Made up to look like an evil Mongol, but easily identified as Black in this British movie that was the first foreign movie to win an Oscar for effects, and another for its technicolor cinematography. It starred the Indian actor Sabu. That flying carpet was spectacular at the time. Jon Hall reprising the role of Douglas Fairbanks in the original 1924 version of the Thief of Bagdad written and produced by Fairbanks and Lotta Woods, directed by her then husband Raoul Walsh. Lotta wrote more the fifty British film scripts before her death. Lotta was a direct descendant of the Dumas's, pere et fils, both half black and the authors of the popular Three Musketeers novels. "All for one and one for all." A phrase we should respect today.

It seems Robin Williams' casting was the aberration. :)

Nothing like judging a performance before you see it. Do you also burn books you haven't read? This movie is geared toward a children's audience, not you and all the other adult whiners. You're showing your age, Depp and Oldman are ..... old. :)

Um - you go watch all you want. I'm not going to drop $50 on something that I wouldn't even watch for free. I'm quite sure you've seen trailers for movies as well, that you thought, "Man, that doesn't look so good. Don't think I'll waste any money on it."

And Will Smith is old, too. He's 50, Depp is 55 and Oldman is 60.

Just because Smith acts like a 12 year old doesn't mean he is one.
