Melancholy songs

Appropriate song to revisit :)

She sang this one, too...you're probably more familiar...

....

I thought I was going to give you a solid "no" ... until it got to the chorus. The chorus is familiar. All the rest makes me wonder where I was that even her name is completely unknown to me.

She was at Woodstock...maybe before your time? Very popular in the late 60's-70's...Brand New Key was a popular song of hers, too...

I should have known. I was born in '62. I just didn't pay close enough attention.

It's very funny that you should mention "Brand New Key". I was talking with my housemate about that yesterday. In the category of goofy 1970's songs. He knew it was from the 70's. I thought it was much earlier. If I had googled it like I thought about doing, then I would have learned her name yesterday instead of today. lol

I have no idea how this one has avoided being posted in this thread but...

Probably a little too stirring to be melancholy ... but they have their melancholy moments ... and I don't want to start a new thread ;)

Completely new to me. I like.

she was huge when I was in grade school-her big hit Lay down (Candles in the wind) was major league.

thread winner given the history behind the song. this however, given what it references is a contender-It was covered by acts as diverse as the Grateful Dead (the most famous version) The National, what became the Allman Brothers Band (31st of February), and Nazareth as well as pop acts like Lulu. Robert Plant covered it as well and Tim Rose ripped it off but this is the original

Significantly less melancholy than the original.
I didn't know the subjective degree of what one finds melancholic was up for debate? For instance I lived about six hundred yards off of Lake Superior when the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty. The song is melancholic for me, though I am sure it is not for others.
But with that said, I do know others who would disagree with your opinion.

Didn't mean to start anything ... to me it's a happy song is all. :)

thinking about the topic-Peter Paul and Mary's Puff the Magic Dragon fits-very well. So does this classic from Bobby D

Not saying you did, was just stating my thoughts on the comment and shrugging.
