The Best Show We'll Never See on TV Again...

That doesn't make any sense. Archie was a character not a person

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carroll_O'Connor

One cannot excuse a person because of a character on a show.

Oh, I know about Connor. I was talking about Roseanne Barr. Capn' mentioned the incident that got her show canned and I was basically saying that I don't give two ****s about an actor's politics or craziness. I haven't watched the revival, but the original 'Roseanne' sitcom was one of the greatest shows in television history, in my opinion, regardless of what I might think of the actor.

They get confused because all the top conservatives they love are characters and half of them don't believe half the nonsense they talk about.

The thought of someone not knowing Archie was the butt of jokes, and thinking he was the show's champion, is beyond hysterical.

There are a million good actors and shows, I feel no obligation to bend for bigots. Are you seriously proposing that we adore Hollywood to such an extent that we should abandon our morals and ethics... for Hollywood? Who needs integrity when we could have our 100th good show of the year?

I think you're valuing sit coms way too much. They're really not important enough to abandon our principles.

Honestly if it weren't for my boss. I wouldn't even know who he is. My parents didn't watch it.

Such a great show. Available on youtube. I recommend "Edith on Jury Duty".

I'm not sure what you mean. I'm not 'bending' for anyone. I'm not witholding criticism of Roseanne Barr. I just seperate my opinion of a show and character from my opinion of an actor. It was a well-written show and an excellent portrayal of a low-income, working-class family. Right up my ****ing ally. I'm not all about putting an end to things like that because someone I don't care for is attached to it.

See my edit, above. I'm totally not with abandoning one's principles out of desire for sit coms.

If you'll support bigots so you can watch a sit com... is there anything you will not support bigots to gain? You want to tolerate bigots for stupid and meaningless stuff. So that's just support of bigots.

You're making my head hurt.

I'm a free-speech libtard. I support people's right to say stupid ****. I'll critisize and counter that speech, and I'll vote against people that I feel are more likely to govern against eqaulity. That's the extent of the level of 'resistance' that I'm willing enact. I don't go out nazi-punching, and I don't want to take anyone's job away because they happen to hold views that I consider to be disgusting.

I live in a pretty conservative area, and have had to come to terms with the fact that many of my neighbors are at least somewhat bigoted. Come to think of it, I was somewhat ignorant on the issue of homosexuality back in high-school (I didn't understand the importance of marriage equality, and didn't understand what it meant to be trans) and I'm not about to dissmiss my neighbors as human beings because of their character flaws.

Still can't stand being in the room with my sister's racist ex-boyfriend. I wish him well, just not anywhere near me. Live and let live, and all that.

I don't really care if I'm 'supporting bigots' financially. I don't hate ignorant people enough to want to see them fail at every aspect of their lives or anything of the sort. I just want to oppose them politically. I wouldn't donate to her campaign if Barr ran for office (even if she wasn't completely off her rocker) but as far as I'm concerned, the show is innocent.

No, I think that is what many people miss.

In many many households in this country, Archie Bunker was the one who was correct and Mike was the moron who wouldn't even work to provide for his family. It's not hysterical, it is completely understandable. Obviously Archie said some things wrong and his positions are not ones most educated people believe in, but to dismiss those who see Archie as the hero is dismissing all the good character qualities Archie had. Archie was a hard working Christian man, who worked to put food on his family's table, sometimes working multiple jobs at a time to provide for his family, loved his wife and daughter and even his son-in-law (and later grandchild). Sure, he had some viewpoints I don't agree with, but it is silly to simply claim Archie had no good qualities.

So much wrong in this post. Odd that you'd pick Emmy's night where we have the most diverse and amount of TV shows on TV at any point in history to show a clip of All in the Family. A TV show from the 1970s. When we have more options for viewing great talent and great stories more than at any time in history. I watch more content on Amazon and Netflix. HBO and Showtime than I do on the big three network Television channels. Where Movie stars are moving to TV in droves and TV budgets have swelled to $100 Million a series. We have westerns, fantasies, dramas, scifi and cyberpunk, comedies, dramedies, period pieces, more late night talk shows than ever before. Travelogues, limited series, cooking shows, and docudramas. Podcasts, audiobooks, political shows (not on cable news) and vulgar vile comedy that puts Archie Bunker to shame. Not to mention all the different novels that have been turned into TV shows since All in the Family.

We have big budget franchises that do better on TV than most movies do at the Box Office. We have complete universes where multiple TV shows collide and come together like a larger movie. We have spinoffs and prequels and continuations. Fans have saved TV shows from cancellation more times than at any other time in history. Four TV shows were saved from cancellation this year and indeed, even Roseanne will live on in another form. You may not like it, but I ask, what is there not to like? If you don't like something radical about one show. Don't watch it. There are 1000s of other options to choose from. That you think All in the Family is the peak of Television is truly sad. It proves that you have chosen not to look for other things, try other options, maybe cut the cord and go streaming.

Ironic that Archie Bunker is the caricature that I think of the most when I hear people talk on this form. (I was born in 1989) The guy who most conservatives have morphed into 110%! My boss worships this fictional character.

You wish society tolerated shows like All in the Family again? We've had TV shows that features drag queens, pop stars, and soft pornography. A superhero that protects the streets of Harlem (And yes the N-word is said many times) and a small town in Indiana that gets taken over by goo monsters. We have a new version of Star Trek and Star Wars is coming to TV in a few iterations too.

Plus! Lots of the shows from that era are actually being rebooted. There were even talks about All in the Family Itself but it appears to have not gone forward. To those of you who say that there is nothing on TV, it's insulting to those of us who follow the industry or work in it. It means that you haven't looked. Simple as that.

/rant.

Archie Bunker was supposed to ridicule WASP males, but polls back then showed that most Americans agreed with him.

I didn't claim he had no good qualities. I claimed he was the butt of the joke on every intellectual issue. Those who take his political and ideological positions seriously need help.

Dang, and thank you.

Norman Lear wrote Archie well. As far as his "real" character, this scene paints who Lear had in mind well.

Great clip. O'Connor was a genius.

"bust your honky hineys"...those were the days, my friend...:2razz:

My browser won't open the format but I will say the best All in the Family is when Sammy Davis Jr was guest.
