Sir Patrick Stewart to reprise Star Trek role Jean-Luc Picard

I wrote about it last night after I saw the announcement. Regardless of what you may think. Star Trek is ALSO a political show. Always has been.

...not to mention philosophy and religion. It sets forth a very particular modern worldview, that of Gene Roddenberry.

I don't know what everyone was soooo uncomfortable with in Discovery? Black lead? Done (Sisko) female captain (done. Janeway.) gay characters? (done. Sulu. both past and present 2009). Political correctness? Done. Discovery basically just redistributed those roles into every main character and threw it in people's faces more boldly.

It's like people conveniently forgot about the lessons Star Trek was teaching them.

Probably not so much forgetting, as not quite ready. What sociologists call “cultural lag” is a powerful force. It can sometimes be reactionary. I think that’s what is going on today. Not just in the United States, but all around the world.

Fair. Yes, it always was.

Perhaps in the passage of time, or my youth, when watching TOST, I didn't realize it. Or is it only more overtly so now, do you think?

I think it's more obvious than perhaps in the past but remember, the war hungry tough guy animalistic Klingons represented the Russians in the classic series and Star Trek featured an international cast of characters all working together. Not to mention the first interracial kiss on TV and other progressive ideas about equality, democracy, and money.

I think we just missed much of it because of our youth. When I go back and watch any of the series now the political side of the show seems much more blatant.

I first watched Star Trek when I was about 10 years old, I didn't know anything about politics 20 years ago, but I liked the technology and the scifi stuff. Watching it throughout my teenage years, I came to understand that it was a very political show. Not sure how you could have missed it.

No doubt the new starship will be unarmed and they will go through the galaxy promoting peace and social justice. They will solve problems with hugs.

Sir Patrick Stewart is boldly going where he has been before - by reprising the Star Trek role of Jean-Luc Picard.

The character will feature in a new CBS All Access series chronicling his life after Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The actor announced the news in a surprise appearance at the annual Star Trek convention in Las Vegas on Saturday, after months of speculation.

The best & only ST series worth watching IMO. Great news.

Saw him live on B'way in The Tempest. All these British actors get there starts & training doing Shakespeare.

I never had the pleasure of seeing him do Shakespeare but I did see his one man A Christmas Carol about 20 years ago and was completely blown away by it.

I'm re-watching TNG right now - halfway through season 4. Great news.

Yeah, I think you both right on that.

I tried watching TNG but never could get past Wesley Crusher, or his totally unbelievable love interest of a mother for Picard. Then there was the buxom airhead that sat next to him and was always "feeling" and "sensing" things. Ugh.

Best Star Trek Ever = DS9.

And the original for me because it set the tone. I hate all the others.

But seriously, CBS all access will have two Trek shows at the same time? That's diluting the brand.

That actually sounds really good. Maybe the new Enterprise can look like a 1960s style Samba van painted in psychedelic tie-dye and rainbow colors with "peace" and "love" and "make love not war" messages written all over it, smelling everywhere up with the strong smell of Marijuana everywhere it goes and annoying all the neighboring planets with a loud stereo playing Grateful Dead songs.

Groovy, man!:lamo

They want Trek 24/7. Everyone wants to follow Game of Thrones and Marvel. I say Make it So. There can NEVER be enough Trek in my life! Plus we waited nearly 13 years for a new Star Trek TV Show since Enterprise (which wasn't as good as Discovery IMO). The brand is stronger than ever.

I don't know. The 90s were a golden era of Trekness.

Yeech. :thumbdown

Youre actually comparing Trek with Marvel? At least the superheroes try to be different- Antman is comedy heist, Captain America is high level government conspiracies, Spiderman is about a kid growing up, Iron Man is about a billionaire, etc.

Trek is always about the same thing: there's a captain, there's a starship, there's a bunch of stupid aliens with pointy ears who speak English, there's transporters, there's shields, etc. Boring!

The ip/franchise strategies are the same as Marvel and GOT. The ST extended Universe is coming and since I'm sure you don't pay for CBSAA you don't have to worry about it if you don't like it.

back when star trek was good.

I dunno I dont really trust CBS All Access anymore. This could be a set-up. The execs there are pissed that Discovery was a flop and that more people cheered for Patrick Stewart than the announcement of another season of Discovery. Discovery was built on stolen scripts and fired people. They will figure out some way to SJW the crap out of it and funnel the money to a reduced crew after the real crew does all the ground work.
