I got the game back when it was first out, hype and all bought hook line and sinker.

Played it a few days, then on the shelf it went gathering dust. But I heard about this awesome new update, so I fried it back up. After nearly 40 hours of play (I am on FMLA and stuck immobile most of the time TYVM) I can say...

I wish I had bought it for the PC, which I will.

Why?

It's not because it's not fun, following the story and building stuff and exploring is better than ever. I figured out most of the new systems, and yes it IS a time sink, but it's an enjoyable experience. The Sentinels are not near as aggressive as they used to be, well unless you land on a planet they KOS, and the added multiship, own a freighter mechanic is great.

What sucks is, and I don't know if this is because I have just a PS4 and not a PRO, but the damn game crashes, a LOT. I just lost 15 min of running about gathering mats for the like the 5th time in a the last 3 hours. So I am over the PS4 version for now. It also has some sound glitches and occasional frame rate issues. After I get some PC time with my gaming rig I'll pass on how it runs.

I do give Hello Games a lot of credit for making this game into what it is, a lto of dev's would have walked after the launch disaster that the game suffered.

hehe...give it a bit, no one releases anything in "finished" status anymore. I bought ARK back in November, and it's practically a new game now...hehe... Good to hear the new stuff is awesome...sorry to hear about the glitches. Maybe in a year they'll actually finish the game... lol

Some publisher's do. God of War 4 is a great example. But you're right: a lot of games publishers now publish have completed content, and then release the rest that should've been in the gamr, as DLC. Although No Man's Sky has apparently vastly improved since launch.

Ya...it's all getting a little silly... I don't mind some of the DLC, if the original game was great...I think of BF3 as an example. But some of these guys are getting carried away.

I think NMS is an exception, given how truly horrible it was at release...they owed everyone a new game, which it sounds like this update makes it. Honestly, I don't think they had a choice...and I don't think it was their original strategy.

No Man's Sky is a weird game. It does alot of things which are really interesting. At times it can be really cool. But there are games out now which do things NMS does, and better. However, none of them do everything NMS does better...NMS Next I have not spent alot of time on yet(about 5 hours), but it reminds me why I like NMS, and why I never seem to spend a whole lot of time with it. Early on(and I am sure this gets better later), you spend so much time just keeping your ship fueled, it gets frustrating. Procedurally generated plants and animals can be interesting, but tend to be kinda meh real quick. Inventory starts out too small. Controls are a nightmare at times. My computer, which runs almost anything without trouble, even at low settings struggles with frame rate in NMS.

And yet it is still a pretty epic game. The scale, the options, the look, all do work pretty well. I suspect once you get past the early grindy parts of the game make it pretty awesome. The problem is that I never make it past that early part, I go to another game to take a break, and don't get back for a long while. Next has done nothing to change that. It is better than it was, but the multiplayer aspect does nothing for me, the grindy parts are still grindy(and seem actually worse than earlier versions, though that might just be me). Overall I like the new tutorial/storyline, and probably will try and grind through more of that this weekend maybe.

Lastly, the biggest problem is that there are simply better games than NMS in the genre now. Just got Elite Dangerous which is an space/open world simulator and has a fantastically better flight model(and very hard one, I am still learning to fly). I have been loving Empyrion: Galactic Survival, which does the whole crash land on a planet, gather resources, build stuff, explore the galaxy thing, but looks so much better to my mind, has better build tools(by far), allows you to build bases and vessels by blueprint which can be downloaded from the Steam Workshop, and throws in RPG elements(you level up, gaining build points which allow you to unlock new items to build). It lacks the epic feel of NMS, but is alot more fun. Avorion is NMS meets Eve Online and pretty cool. Subnautica is NMS on a water world, and possibly the best looking of the genre. Rimworld is NMS as a strategy game.

NMS Next is a really good game, and maybe a great one, if I ever put the time into finding it, but games need to hook you early to get you to that point. That is the area NMS and the Next update kinda struggle, getting that initial hook.

Also, note: like all things with games, these are strictly my opinions and not objective fact. Take them for what they are worth.

I am just now getting back into PC gaming after a 10 year break. What gaming I have done in that time has been on an Xbox or occasionally a laptop. I got me a dedicated gaming PC yesterday (Alienware Aurora R7) and am looking for games to try on it. NMS is on my list.

I had ED as a rental on my PS4 and it seemed like Eve in that you'd be behind the power curve jumping in. I might have to reconsider that.

I hadn't heard of the Empyrian game have to look into it.

Good stuff, thank you Redress.

EEEK Alien ware, over priced!!! Still, it's not a bad rig. I just looked at Alienware when we got our systems and found a local shop that did it MUCH cheaper with better parts i5 6800k, 16gigs DDR 4 ram, Nvidia 1080 Ti 11gb, liquid cooled CPU, nice case for about 2600

Don't take my comments on ED as saying it is a good game. I am still working on the training missions, as learning to fly is not easy. I have done the docking exercise challenge about a dozen times, and only now think I got it decently down. Call my review of that as incomplete, but hopeful.

Empyrion: https://store.steampowered.com/app/383120/Empyrion__Galactic_Survival/. Go to the workshop and look at some of the ships players have designed using the tools ingame. Pretty much every ship from Scifi movies and TV is there, plus some just really cool designs. Edit: note the video at the link is very representative of gameplay, moreso than most game videos at Steam.

Like I said, I'm just jumping back in after a decade. What computer gaming I have done has been on a laptop, so this is a nice change of pace. If I find myself really enjoying it then I might dabble in building my own rig. That sounds like it could be fun in itself.

I almost self built, but it's changed so much that I wanted a pro to make what I wanted and the prices were great. Far better than any website company and I got the parts I wanted.

I spent a few more hours on ED tonight, and I am moving it into the "good game" column. Not sure how long it will hold my interest, but now that I am more used to the controls, and starting to get better at doing things(and have an auto docking module), it has gotten pretty interesting. Biggest problem right now is the overload of options.

I do give Hello Games a lot of credit for making this game into what it is, a lto of dev's would have walked after the launch disaster that the game suffered.

I am slowly advancing in NMS. Found last night a crashed ship that I repaired the engine too, then traded it for a 21 slot ship with a couple nice upgrades already installed(the crashed ship was smaller, but had a ton of modules, all of which would have had to be repaired). The extra inventory space made it so much easier to stock up on the various fuels, so I can spend some time actually doing other stuff. Got the capital ship and ran the first expedition(got 200k units, which at this stage is a nice help). Now I am going to spend some time exploring, making some money, and getting a new multi-tool(they do not seem to be cheap, but the starter multi-tool just does not have enough slots, so got to be done). I am assuming I will eventually be able to make some long range goals, just no idea yet what those might be.

The game is starting to grow on me, but I am putting much more time into Elite Dangerous and Empyrion, and thinking about starting a new EU4 game(maybe an African nation, or something in India), so time is limited.

Showoff....

Hehe no, just off work long enough, and the S Class only has 17 slots, I use it just to bounce to new systems
I really am intrigued by the Elite Dangerous game, if it's not like Eve online where you are sucking hindtit to catch up, maybe I pick it up.

In ED, worked on the Community Goals initiative(there is 2 each week, one combat, one delivering supplies...I did the later) last week, and without trying too hard, finished in the top 50 %, which was a nice cash infusion, plus making good cash while I did it. Plus you can play solo, and not on the server with all the players, and there are simply a ton of options. You can do missions, you can play trader, you can haul passengers around, you can explore, you can mine, you can fight pirates, and probably a ton of things I do not even know about. It takes awhile to get top end ships and stuff, but I got my type 6 freighter(which is not a bad ship), on my third day playing, and will probably move up to a type 7 tonight. For reference, the various ships you can have in game: https://i.imgur.com/ETIntBZ.jpg

Nice, that's really got my attention now. Final question, if you play on the servers, how bad is the ganking?

Not sure, I have been doing solo so far, until I have a lot more experience. If you do get it, let me know, I can give a few helpful tips.

Probably in a few weeks, let the NMS bug wear off.
