What are you listening to? ver. 15.0

Marc Cohn, who was a studio pianist/vocalist on dozens of Top 100 songs, scored big with this 1991 hit.

Marc Cohn - Walking In Memphis

These days it pays to turn it up full tilt.

A catchy and thoughtful tune by High South.

Since the High South remind me of Crosby Stills Nash (and Young) here is my favorite CSN song.

Cheers and be well.

This song was written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King in 1966. In 1967, the Byrds (Roger McGuinn/David Crosby/Chris Hillman/Michael Clarke) were considering including this song on their upcoming new album, The Notorious Byrd Brothers. David Crosby objected saying the song sounded too light and was typical of a Brill Building song. Crosby wanted to drop this and instead include his song Triad (about a ménage à trois). In rather quick order, a vote was taken and Triad was excluded, David Crosby was fired by the band (for many reasons), Goin' Back was recorded on October 11, and released as a single by Columbia on October 20. Personally, I think the band got it right. Goin' Back was much better suited for The Notorious Byrd Brothers album. David Crosby would be replaced with Graham Parsons. Crosby gave his song Triad to the Jefferson Airplane who recorded it and included it on their Crown Of Creation album. Grace nailed it.

The Byrds - Goin' Back

I think I'm goin' back, to the things I learned so well in my youth
I think I'm returning to, those days when I was young enough to know the truth
Now there are no games, to only pass the time
No more electric trains, no more trees to climb
But thinking young and growing older, is no sin
And I can play the game of life to win

I can recall the time, when I wasn't ashamed to reach out to a friend
Now I think I've got, a lot more than just my toys to lend
Now there's more to do, than watch my sailboat glide
But everyday can be, a magic carpet ride
A little bit of courage, is all we lack
So catch me if you can, I'm goin' back

Now there's more to do, than watch my sailboat glide
But everyday can be, a magic carpet ride
A little bit of courage, is all we lack
So catch me if you can
I'm goin' back

Grace nailed it.

Let's face it, what and who didn't Grace nail?

Also, unfortunately, Marc Cohn after being shot in the head during a mugging, never did commercially recover as a singer songwriter. A loss for us all, but he has made a career composing movie and tv scores, songs for other artists, and commercial jingles. A truly talented pianist.

A seemingly eclectic selection of singers, but they all have something in common, they are all related, tho they don't look it. And all the songs are based on poetry by Edmund Spencer, a 16th century Tudor era English poet of poets, whose work somehow entered the New Orleans musical lexicon with entirely new vernacular and meanings.

Elizabethean zydeco, who would have thunk? What a great journey!

"From the bierries to the boughs
let the light shine on the peoples eyes
party on party for no rhyme" 1579 Edmund Spencer

Joining Stephen Stills and Graham Nash on vocals are Timothy B. Schmit (Poco/Eagles) and Art Garfunkel :)

So Yusef Islam still has a little Cat Stevens left in him. How sweet.

Meanwhile back at the ranch......

Though Bryan Ponce and Adriana Flores share the stage with Joey Q as part of the East LA souldies outfit Thee Sinseers, they really step into the spotlight with The Altons, a group they themselves founded along with drummer Caitlin Moss and bassist Gabriel Maldonado . On this their debut single on Penrose, Bryan sings the lead with a smoky-sweet falsetto that bends tenderly from growl to howl and back again. The group takes a turn through a classic Miracles-style mid-tempo groove on the A-side, leaving you helplessly addicted to their sweet eponymous refrain, When you go that’s when you’ll know… However, it’s the B-side that prompted producer Bosco Mann to declare Bryan Ponce the most underrated singer on the scene today. Of course that won’t last long when the soul heads get their needles in “Over and Over.” The secret is out. Dude can sing. This is my jam.
