I was about 10, a Sunday evening, came out of my room where I was finishing last minute homework. My folks were watching Ed Sullivan. Marvin was performing. I had no choice, I had to watch and listen. Sat down next to dad on the couch. His hand went to rest on the back of my neck. Marvin finished, I wanted to hear more, but that was it for the show. My dad said, "He is very good, we'll be hearing much more from him. Finish your homework." Reluctantly, I did.

You likely don't know her name, but you've definitely heard her music, many times, another unsung session heroine, Marvin's favorite session bass player:

Great tune. I was in a group that did some Motown years ago. Did both that version of Ain't No Mountain and Marvin Gaye's What's Going On. Bassist on both of those was the incomparable James Jamerson. I love playing those tunes. They switched to Carol after Motown relocated to LA and Jamerson died. Bob Babbit was the other main Motown bassist. He was one of the few white guys in the Funk Brothers. He did the bass part on Midnight Train to Georgia which is one of my all time favorites

Carol Kaye is a great player. Started life as a guitarist and switched to bass - which she played with a pick. I've spoken to her - via bassist message boards - a couple of times over the years. Last I knew she'd fallen on hard times financially.

So many of the session players were immensely talented, rarely gaining the recognition they deserve. I'm sorry to hear Carol fell on hard times, a commonality for session players, no residuals. This is where the unions failed their members. I played with Carol a few times, she was always generous of spirit, encouraging and willing to teach. I know she outclassed me as a musician, but she never put on airs. She worked the west coast more than the east, by far. So I only ran into her 5 or 6 times in studios, and never heard a negative word about her. She's still working after all these years, so hopefully she's back in the black, doing commercials, tv show themes and occasional movie scores.

Rod had a Small Faces haircut! Stevie Marriott left to form Humble Pie, and they need two people to replace him! Ronnie Wood and Rod came in.
