What are you listening to? ver. 15.0

new old stock
from 1963
soon to be released
original masters were thought to be destroyed. seems Coltrane's ex had a copy of it. only recently identified

I heard about this a few months ago and managed to get my hands on a reviewer's copy of the release, no digital processing, a lot of tape hiss, plain white cover, with all composition credits given to John Coltrane. However, after listening repeatedly, and then comparing to recordings with in the two prior years by both Coltrane and McCoy Tyner, that actual composition credit for much of this set belongs to Tyner. Tyner shaped much of modern jazz, and he certainly shaped Coltrane, as his muse. In no way does this lessen Coltrane's work here or his legacy, but I can't imagine Coltrane'a composition progress and exploration without Tyner.

This one was a stoner’s dream. The children’s dialogue would switch left and right speakers and the last one switched at a faster rate. Got high and listened to this band a lot.

They are from Dayton and Yellow Springs, Ohio--just down the road from me. Glen Helen, for example isn't a person. It's an educational nature preserve that includes the magnificent Clifton Gorge.

They all simply got trapped by life. Their demise had nothing to do with fame or success and everything to do with marriage, rent, and having babies.

Jim Barlow, and Susan, did part time auditing work for me in the 90s. Wonderful people. Trudy of the Hopple Street Exit was part of my operation as well.

There are no unreleased goodies. But there was a second album with the guy from the Cyrkle (Mike Losecamp, red rubber ball) singing.

Ask RCA where disk 2 is. Maybe I'll upload it to youtube.

I asked. I still have some contacts at RCA. The band was dropped by A&R, never getting past regional success other than the single release of Chelsea Morning, not enough sales to justify expenses in their eyes. Only about 3k copies of the second release were sold including disk jobbers, cut outs. I received a copy, not the same band, not the same music, more bubble gum and pop of the day for AM radio, no bosa nova. Mike Losecamp sings on the first release. Two album cover printings, no credit on the first, credit on the second. RCA has since sold their catalog that included GLS. Got my copy of the second disk from Pete Shelton who produced them, nice guy.

Thanks for the info.

I love covers. We start learning music as toddlers with covers, and we all know Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. I still can't get the melody to the Pink Panther song out of my head. One of the goals for both amateur and professional musicians is making a cover your own song.

Here's a few, from the originals to some of the covers. Enjoy.

This one kind of pertinent to all the tragic news recently.

Skip the chatter of the first 3 minutes

This song has always moved me deeply, since the first time I heard it, and everytime I've played it, which is still often.

This is different kind of cover, a traditional hymn, sung by many, in churches, in homes, outdoors, but this cover does it justice.

This is folk music at its best. It's all folk music, less we forget.

Appropriate song for what's going on...Wikipedia says this song dates back to the days of slavery when it was common practice to sell children away from their parents...

Another great song appropriate for our time...

Fastball - The Way

(The inspiration for this song is the story of the disappearance of an elderly married couple, Lela and Raymond Howard from Salado, Texas, who left home in June 1997 to attend the Pioneer Day festival at nearby Temple, Texas, despite Lela's Alzheimers and Raymond recently recovering from brain surgery. They were discovered two weeks later, dead, at the bottom of a ravine near Hot Springs, Arkansas, hundreds of miles off their intended route.)
