My first musical

I watched my first musical the other day that I wasn't forced to watch.

I am hooked. I absolutely loved this movie/musical. I never thought I'd hear myself say that.

The Greatest Showman (2017) - IMDb

What have I been missing?

There are lots of great musicals to see and, if you get the chance, see them in a theater instead of on a DVD.

Ones you absolutely have to see (not all are still touring):
1. Gypsy
2. Sweeny Todd
3. Oklahoma
4. South Pacific
5. Fiddler on the Roof
6. West Side Story
7. The Sound of Music
8. Annie
9. Jersey Boys
10. Chicago
11. Guys and Dolls
12. Godspell
13. Ragtime
14. Hair
15. A Chorus Line

I know I'm missing a bunch but the ones above are at or near the top of the list.

As an aside, I saw Book of Mormon last night. Some of the acting was outstanding but the story was totally brain dead and punctuated by enough vulgarity to turn me off...and I generally don't mind crude comments and vulgarity.

My daughter loves this one, OFG. I have never watched it, because it was a musical, and I just didn't want to watch it. I think I need to give it a try. Thanks!

Thanks! I live in a dinky little town that generally doesn't even get musicals at the movie theater, much less getting to see them live. I will try to catch a few of these, though and see if I like them as much as I liked The Greatest Showman. The music in this? Absolutely amazing. I bought the digital album within 10 minutes of finishing the film.

You're right. There is nothing --- nothing --- like seeing a professional production live on stage. My first one was Miss Saigon when I was a teenager. I was in awe. It's amazing what live performers can do. And the production of them all -- moving the set around, the design of the set, lighting, etc. Just fascinating.

A lot of the movie musicals are just mediocre. However, I LOVED The Greatest Showman. I've been listening to the soundtrack non-stop since it came out. I can't wait to watch it again - it comes out on DVD this coming week!

Other great productions everyone should see in their lifetime:

The Phantom of the Opera
Les Miserables
The Lion King
Wicked
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Peter Pan

But not Cats. God, that musical needs to die.

You're welcome.

I cant stand full length musicals. The only time I could watch them is during The Simpsons or Looney Tunes.

I've heard a lot of people saying they've never liked a musical until they saw The Greatest Showman.

The sound track to Showman is amazing. There isn't a single song on that soundtrack that I don't absolutely love.

I told my daughter just last night that I wish somebody would release this on video. Being a history nerd, I've always wanted to see it, but last I heard, it is only showing in NYC and Chicago.

I plan on going to Syracuse in September. I wonder if it's still selling out every night. I wouldn't mind making the drive into the city to see it.

My daughter was obsessed with Hamilton for like a year. She has the soundtrack on CD plus I bought her the album for Christmas. That year was easy to shop for her.

My favorite musical of all time is Phantom of the Opera, especially if Sarah Brightman is the lead. The soundtrack alone mesmerizes me.

There have been others I'm fond of, West Side Story, The Sound of Music, South Pacific, Fiddler on the Roof, but I'm truly not a "musical" fan, so if one hooks me, I'm hooked for life. :)

I am with Showman. Absolutely hooked. Can't wait to watch it again, but don't want to watch without my daughter, and she's gone until tomorrow night.

I am going to try some others and see if I like any of them as much as I like this one.

I haven't seen Hamilton yet. It is continually sold out. Tickets at the box office are the cheapest way to see, but they are still very pricey. You need to plan in advance for this. Hope it works for you.

Also wanted to add, I'm not a huge fan of musicals, but really liked The Showman also. It was a fun show!

Yeah I looked at Ticketmaster. Decent tickets are like a grand each. That's pricey for something that I may not even like. I may see about getting a ticket in the nosebleed section, just to see if I like it, and then if I do, force my husband to treat me to better seats the next time. :D :D

Anything with Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire dancing, especially the latter with Ginger Rogers.

They make it look so easy:

The only one I've liked was the Book of Mormon.

Utterly hilarious.

We caught it on Broadway way back. I forget what it's called but it was essentially in late rehearsal's phase before it first started running, so the tickets were much more affordable.

Loved the Bruno Mars compilation!

No other country has as much success as the US with either shows or movies based on music and dance. From Busby Berkley to Bruno Mars.

I HATE musicals....The Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof and a zillion others that I have tried where they are walking down the street and they break into song and dance.

Maybe there is still hope for me.

I've always been the same way, Sal. Try this one. This one turned a corner for me.
