Twilight Zone and Night Gallery

Rod Serling productions.

Do you like them? Do you not like them? Why or why not?

I love Twilight Zone. Most episodes are very entertaining and often thought provoking.

Night Gallery always scared me as a kid, and I never could get past that initial impression. I sometimes watch it now, but it's kind of weird, too.

I loved The Twilight Zone. Always inventive plotting, a twist and a certain kind of justice at the end.

"The Obsolete Man" is one of the finest half-hours of television ever broadcast.

damn, you made me think about this series I loved as a kid.

I loved "The Twilight Zone." Loved Rod Serling. Met him once and have never gotten over it and what he had to say. He was just so genuine, so normal and nice. Sat on the floor and stuck his hand into the potato chip bag same as everybody else. He was a WWII vet, you know, and he talked about being trapped in a cave in the Philippines and writing his name on the wall and vowing if he got out alive, he would someday come back...and did.

From a 2011 Maureen Dowd column in which she talks about how relevant Serling remains (including being George Lucas's inspiration for "The Force": Prosecutors and reporters...might do well to keep in mind Serling's postmodern mantra: Nothing is what it seems. Agnes Moorehead may seem to be a lonely farmwoman under attack by scary little robots, but after she kills them and takes an ax to their spaceship, it turns out that she's the scary Amazon alien and the little men were U.S. astronauts from Earth. I have never seen Night Gallery. My mom liked Twilight Zone, so I have seen a lot of episodes. There are some that I still remember.

Was he smoking a cigarette when you met him? He always seemed to smoke a lot... lol

Also, "Tales from the Darkside". Not Serling, but similar.

Twilight Zone the TV series is nothing I watched as a kid. I had to look it up to find out the first episode was in 1959.
I remember watching Sugarfoot, Zorro, Lassie, Father Knows Best, Leave it to Beaver, Jackie Gleason, I love Lucy, Ed Sullivan Show, Flintstones, Ozzie and Harriet and I am sure there are others I watched from time to time but not Twilight Zone. But TV viewing was never a big part of my growing up. In fact most viewing was done as a family in the evenings. Hard to believe in those days Fred Flintstone was on prime time. :)

I was born years after but watched them in re runs as a little kid- very scary for me back then, and I needed a night light to sleep alone in my room lol.

Another one which scared the beejesus out of me was the Norliss Tapes and Dont be Afraid of the Dark, made for TV movies.

I loved Twilght Zone, Outer Limits, Night Gallery and the Night Stalker as well. I watched them all. When the Twilight Zone marathons are broadcast, I try to record the best of them to keep for a bit. I'd sit and watch episode of TTZ, but these are some of my faves:

To Serve Man
Time Enough At Last
The Monsters are due on Maple Street
Nick of Time
It's a Good Life (scared the heck out of me)
Nothing In The Dark
The Hunt
Nightmare at 20,000 Feet

Stephen King had a good evaluation of ZONE when he said that about 1/3 of the episodes were excellent or really good while another 1/3 were decent enough TV to get viewers to keep coming back and the remaining 1/3 rather forgettable.

Thats a pretty high batting average for a cheaply made TV show and it was all due to the writing.

I love Twilight Zone but never heard of Night Gallery. After looking it up, sounds like something else I'd love too and will probably watch a couple episodes shortly. Seems like a good show to watch on a cool rainy Monday morning.

Another couple shows I also liked that are somewhat similar would be Beyond Belief: fact or fiction, Tales from the Crypt, and when I was a kid Are you Afraid of the Dark.

Those are the jewels - no doubt about it. I remember as a kid watching TO SERVE MAN with the big twist at the end and I thought it was just the coolest end I had ever seen - and still love it today.

I would add EYE OF THE BEHOLDER to your list.

Those and "The Outer Limits" :rock

Also hard to believe is Fred and Barney hawking Winston cigarettes, but they surely did.

He smoked six packs a day and this killed him, but no, he wasn't. He did have the darkest circles under his eyes I've ever seen except once. They weren't circles, they were long black rectangles that were difficult not to stare at, and the TV studio had to have used very heavy makeup to conceal them.

Gosh I forgot about that. I think the reason I didn't watch Twilight Zone is because it came on after my bedtime. We only had one TV so you didn't always get to watch what you wanted. But I do remember there were some programs the whole family enjoyed watching together like The Andy Griffith Show.

I was just talking about this last night with somebody. There was one TV, and it was in my parents' bedroom. My little sister and I were allowed to watch Disney at 6, and that was about it. Later, my mom got a little black-and-white for the kitchen, and I'd sneak downstairs to watch the Dick Van Dyke show on Wednesdays. We played outside every day until dark-thirty, and we read a lot too. Later, when I was a parent myself, I wouldn't allow my kids to have their own TVs in their rooms, and they have both since thanked me for this. Of course, they grew up in the country, and there were lots more fun things to go than worship the video goddess(es).

Imo Rod was a genius when it came to writing about the human psyche...love all his shows, but especially the TZ shows...I have 109 episodes recorded right now as back up when there's nothing worth watching on TV...I never tire of seeing them...

We've always only been a 1 TV family, the mrs's rules and she was right.
