Current TV Series You'd Like To Recommend

If you got Netflix, give Suburra a shot- it's about mafia gangsters based in Rome.

OK, good, this one is in standard Italian. And yes, I got Netflix, so, I'll watch it. Thanks for the recommendation.

Well I started Watchmen, I was reminded it was out by this thread.

I'm impressed, it's quite enjoyable so far. Good production value, some great acting/casting, and the plots/character design are wickedly unique compared to mainstream everything...even superhero movies.
I saw the movie, never read any.

That opening scene...brutal. Really enjoying it so far, hard to stop watching it, but I hate binging (having done it enough to make me say that on plenty of shows!).

I am hooked on WATCHMEN. Its really good and episode five was exceptional.

Also watched the whole season four of MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE and it was excellent.

Probably already mentioned, but Good Omens.

I think there are six ep. I only saw the first one last night. Enough to recommend. Hilarious. And I like Tennant as an actor already, whether it's Shakespeare, Who, or something else.

watching MITHC now, it's amazing. Pity this is the final season. :(

Just finished:

Jack Ryan season 2
. I wasnt all that impressed with season 1, and this one just takes a dump. Jack Ryan is basically James Bond now, and even his love interest has mysteriously disappeared, destroying any sort of continuity with the previous season. The writers also seem to have ignored the political realities of Venezuela and instead portrays the country as some sort of banana republic dictatorship which is still outwardly friendly to the US- seems to me they mixed it up with Colombia. Totally predictable and bad. 1/10

Yes - I will miss it. The amazing subtlety of so many of the lead characters never fails to impress me.

I don't know if this series has been mentioned yet.

I watched a docu-series on PBS entitled Country Music.

There are eight episodes, following the history of Country music. It is incredibly well done and should be watched by anyone interested in American music, of any sort.
It is all about knowing your roots, music wise.

I've talked about this Ken Burns documentary on this thread and agree with you; anyone interested in American music should watch it, and it's absolutely riveting. I began taking notes within 10 minutes, and midway through the episodes, I purchased the documentary for my sister and brother-in-law. I learned so much about the rise of radio! Seeing a very young Louis Armstrong playing with Jimmie Rodgers and an even younger Bob Dylan with Johnny Cash was amazing.

No matter your musical preferences, I think everybody will say, "There wasn't enough time devoted to _____!" Burns could have doubled the length of the documentary (16 hours) and still not have covered all the marvelous talents thoroughly.

Man in the High Castle Season 4. Sadly this was the final season. One of my favorite shows and I will miss it since Im a huge PKD fan. The alternate universe in which the Axis powers won WW2 is weak in some points, because they killed off one of the major characters in the first episode, so we never get to see his story arc. Another important supporting character from the previous season also disappears and I wonder what happened to him. All in all, the story centers on a growing rebellion in the Japanese held US territory and the ending is ambiguous, just like in the book. In the end its still compelling to watch because it is well researched and just draws you in. The best PKD adaptation Ive ever seen other than Blade Runner. 8/10

I finally got around to giving The Mandalorian a chance, and I'm quite impressed. As one who believes that nothing good came out of the Star Wars movies after The Empire Strikes Back, my feeling is that the franchise failed to deliver anything unique and fresh. The Mandalorian delivers a vibrant and colorful universe with a compelling narrative and characters that have the potential to grow. One of the main failings of the Star Wars films is the 2-d cardboard characters with terrible lines and wooden acting. The Mandalorian corrects those critical weaknesses, finally giving us good acting and passably decent dialogue. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's not amazing acting. We're not talking Jeremy Irons in Watchmen or Anthony Hopkins in Westworld stuff, but it is good, and it allows me to finally get immersed in a story that I actually give a damn about.

Everyone should have an armored bear as a friend:

I am watching Jack Ryan, just started the 2nd season. Not bad. Lots of 4 letter words thrown about is my only complaint.

You might want to try Condor if you have Direct or Uverse. It is an AT&T original series based on the novel "Six Days of the Condor". Basic plot with as little spoilers as possible is a CIA analyst gets drawn in to and becomes a target of a conspiracy

That sounds interesting. Thank you.

Bleech. Season 2 took a nosedive. Jack Ryan is supposed to be an analyst but he basically became James Bond and the continuity from last season is destroyed (his love interest disappeared) and not to mention that the Venezuela depicted in the series is nothing like reality.

Condor is terrible too. The main character looks miscast and its like a shoddy remake of the Robert Redford movie. I watched a few episodes and gave up on it.

If you two love a good spy thriller series, watch the Bureau- its on Sundance. It's a French show, but the writing is superior to those other two shows.

Don't have Sundance.

On Condor, I am not all the way through Season 1 yet but I like that there are so many female characters, good bad and other. Unusual for spy flicks.

Got done with season 2. Not as well made as the first, too predictable. Back to the food channel it is.
Is anyone watching New Amsterdam?

Agreed. Great show, and it mostly kept the style and the feel of the book (which I read much before the series started) all the way to the last season, which is more than what can be said of many other series based on books. I did still think that the last season got to be a little rushed, but all things considered, it was still good. Yes, 8 out of 10 is right.

Yes. As usual, I agree with you. We seem to have very similar tastes. Season 2 of Jack Ryan: 1, at most 2 out of 10. Season 1 was a 6, maybe a solid 7 out of 10 (still flawed but kind of entertaining), but season 2 is an example of a huge nosedive, indeed. Totally ridiculous. I won't be watching season 3 if it's ever made.

For those that recommended/watched the Borgias...why are so many of them married? The cardinals and vice chancellor, etc? How can they publicly have families? How can the Pope acknowledge his kids?

I'm not Catholic, obviously. Is the rule not allowing Catholic clergy to be celibate fairly recent? (Last couple of hundred yrs or so)

I'm finding this very confusing. Otherwise, it has drawn me in.

The series reboot of Mad About You is every bit as good as the original.
At this time it's exclusive for Spectrum subscribers only but I am sure Sony Pictures will be happy to expand that if it grows legs, and I think it will.

If you liked Paul (Paul Reiser) and Jaimie (Helen Hunt) the first time around, you'll love it all over again.

watch

Of course, as a film editor, how could I not recommend Paul Buchman.
He's a film editor.

I just started the 2nd season of the Kominsky Method on Netflix and Paul Reiser is in it. OMG I cannot believe how he has aged. Way way more than it seems in the trailer you posted. Not sure if it's makeup magic in the reboot or to make him look terrible in the Kominsky Method but it is depressing to see him in KM...altho he's playing a good part and doing it well.

The church during that time was very corrupt. The Borgia Pope (assuming youre referring to him) wasnt married, but it was an open secret he had mistresses and he publicly acknowledged his children like Cesare Borgia.

By the way, if youre watching The Borgias with Jeremy Irons- they sort of cancelled that one so it ends abruptly (and I didnt think it was good anyway). There was another series also called Borgia, which aired at the same time starring John Doman (the police captain in the Wire) which ran for more seasons and I think that one is better.

Thanks.

LOL I'm watching it because of Jeremy Irons and Colm Feore. But I've seen about 5 episodes now and have been completely sucked in; it's pretty wild but I'm going with it.

I appreciate the warning about the end tho.

I just finished season 3 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. I loved season 1, didn't like season 2, but fortunately season 3 is good again. Overall I grant to this show 8 out of 10. The lead actress is wonderful (and also very pretty and sexy), her character is great, and there are many other strong points, but at times the show gets a bit lost in parallel stories and loses pace. Season 2 appeared like the show over-extended itself and the running joke was old, but season 3 does reinvent the fun, and ends with a huge twist that makes you be eager for season 4. Very entertaining but not without some flaws, therefore not 10 out of 10; 8 seems right.

Season 4 was going really well, doing exactly what it needed to be doing, until the last five minutes.
