Current TV Series You'd Like To Recommend

I just finished watching all episodes of the Netflix season 1 sci-fi animation series "Love Death and Robots." Highly uneven, with some weak episodes, some so-so episodes, some good ones, and some outstanding ones. Variable visuals too, some very elaborate, some very simple. Some very graphic with gore, some beautiful. Some very explicitly erotic, others more innocent. Some with a lot of dark humor, some humorless. Some short, some long. Anyway, a very mixed bag, with no real common ground (they just put together a bunch of very different sci-fi animation) but certainly, somewhat interesting; not a waste of time, although ultimately kind of forgettable.

Yeah, yeah, I know that my "review" is highly ambivalent. It's just that it matches the uneven quality. But for those who like science fiction and animation, I'd recommend it.

Finished Kingdom season 1 a few weeks back. I highly recommend it. If youre tired of zombie shows being slow and soap operatic, then this is the perfect antidote for you. 9/10

Suburra Season 2- the Italians have quietly become kings when it comes to gangster TV shows. Not quite as nihilistic or brutal as Gomorra, this is nonetheless very good, and is better than its American and British counterparts. 8/10

Argh!!!

Why is it some TV series are getting dumber and dumber?

FBI agents running around the world screaming "freeze Federal agent"... No they can't. In fact if they did they would be arrested...

But the one that pisses me off is the ability of the heroes to almost instantly travel from the one place to another in the world...

I loved the new Mcgyver show but gaw it is getting ridiculous on some of the travel ****. Same with other shows like Hawaii 5 O (in and out of freaking North Korea like it was a trip to Cancun) and even NCIS...shows that are in theory simple stories, but become so unrealistic because of these idiotic timeline issues.

But of new series I am liking The enemy with in and The Rookie...this usually means they will get cancelled.

Also started Gloaith and not bad.

The Passage Season 1- Ive read the first two books of Justin Cronin's apocalyptic vampire trilogy, and this is a fair (okay, but not great) adaptation of it. There are major changes overall, like the main character of Amy, who's ethnicity and age have been changed- in the book she's just a little blond girl of 6, very much a child with no personality- yet in the series she's a streetwise 10 year old and I guess it works better since she is a stronger character in it.

The addition of the dream sequences is also a big change from the book. Season 1 in fact just really covers the first half of book 1, which starts the apocalypse. Everything is explained beforehand, and the main baddie is already introduced here (he doesnt appear in person or is even identified until book 3, so they mixed up a lot of plots form all three books). The actress who plays Amy is in fact the best actor in the whole series. Wolgast (who is played by Zack from Saved by the Bell) is pretty lousy (he still acts the same even after he got shot in one episode), as is the other adults in the show.

All in all, a "passable" adaptation I guess. 6/10

The wife is into "Killing Eve" season two. I catch parts of it here and there. It's pretty good.

The Hot Zone (TV Mini-Series 2019– ) - IMDb I dont normally watch NG since theyre so much into the climate change nonsense, but this little gem was worth it. It's a miniseries based on a possible Ebola outbreak in the US and the efforts by Army doctors and scientists to contain it. Apparently it was based on a true incident that occurred in the late 80s. It starts off really well and although it peters out towards the end its still compelling enough overall to be recommended. 7.5/10

Doom Patrol (TV Series 2019– ) - IMDb OK, I held off from watching this because I thought it was going to be another Umbrella Academy show (heck the set up seems remarkably the same), but after watching 3 episodes of this.... its way better! Whereas UA had only about 2 interesting characters, in this one, almost all the characters are interesting, and the plot doesnt slow down either. I got another 12 episodes to go but so far its keeping my interest, which is a surprise since I consider most of these kind of shows boring.

Plenty of laughs and zany superheroes with weird powers. Think Deadpool movies, but weirder and less campy jokes. This is probably the best superhero show Ive seen alongside Daredevil season 1 and Punisher Season 1.

Rating so far: 8.5/10 (though this could change if the quality drops)

Watched the first episode the other night and both my wife and I liked it a great deal. It has much promise. Looking forward to binge watching the other episodes this week.

Manhunt: The Unabomber (TV Series 2017– ) - IMDb Miniseries about the hunt for the Unabomber. Paul Bettany is excellent as the bomb making neo-luddite Ted Kazinsky, and a lot of the narrative is good and very thorough. the problem is the main character played by Sam Worthington- he isnt a good actor and he mumbles his lines a lot. 6/10

Waco (TV Mini-Series 2018) - IMDb Finally got to see this. It paints a more sympathetic view of David Koresh and really gives a black eye to the ATF and the FBI. I thought it was pretty good. 8/10

Catch-22 (TV Mini-Series 2019– ) - IMDb Its a miniseries based on Heller's book, and is sort of the expanded version of the movie made back in the 70's. It's a black comedy about Air Force bomber crews in Italy. I thought it started out pretty well, but kinda petered out in the end. Kept my attention throughout the whole thing though. 7/10

Das Boot (TV Series 2018– ) - IMDb German TV series about U-boat crews during WW2. It's based on the old war movie Das Boot. Just started it and it looks kinda interesting so far.

Love, Death & Robots

Check it out on Netflix - it's an anthology series where all episodes are animated and all done by different animation teams, so they all have different animation styles. The stories are all strikingly interesting, each in their own way.

Was going to say Altered Carbon when I saw the thread title, lol. Loved it so much went out and got the books.

Billions Season 3 is coming out this month. Paul Giamatti is a straight badass...

Billions is one I keep pushing my wife to watch. We'll get to it eventually.
I'm hopelessly addicted to Ray Donovan and Shameless, although without my hot babe crush Fiona, I wonder what it's going to be like. Thankfully my other hot babe crush Veronica is still there.

Das Boot started off well, but quickly went downhill. I dont recommend it. Ugh. All the cliches you could think of ended up being shown. Lots of lazy writing too. Final score: 4.5/10

Gomorrah season 4- started off so-so but really picked up steam. This remains my all-time favorite crime show after The Wire. Apparently this beats GoT ratings in Italy and I can see why. It's nihilistic and brutal, plus based on real life incidents. If you don't mind watching subtitles then I highly recommend this. 8.5/10

I also recommenced Anne with an E on Netflix:

Canadian classic reinvented for the 21st century. Highly recommenced it. From the same writer as Breaking Bad. A lot of people have problems because it does not follow the original novels that closely, is a lot darker compared to other adaptations, and I think very well organically inserts messages about equality and being yourself. If that is a problem go watch one of the other 100 other TV adaptations.

On Amazon Prime, Electric Dreams based on Philip K. Dick's short stories is a great sci-fi anthology series. It's very similar to Black Mirror. Quality stuff.

Unfortunately, somewhat limited to Cinemax where it is an original series, based on notes left by Bruce Lee, recovered by his daughter, Warrior. The first season was a corker, centered on the San Francisco Chinatown Tong Wars over opium, prostitution and gambling turf, the Irish anti-Chinese labor conflicts, political governmental and police corruption, of the late 19th century. I expected kung fu chop suey melodrama, instead found Shakespearean themed drama, plots within plots, with a sense of humor, and top notch acting from new actors, including American Asian actors. Top end production values and cinematography. Metaphors flying in all directions, including mythos of the old west. A surprise about immigration, failure, redemption, revenge, misogyny, bigotry and openness. A real surprise. It is up on streaming bootleg sites for the curious and not Cinemax subscribed. HBO which owns Cinemax, has been touting the illegal downloads.

Stranger Things Season 3- OK, I'm almost done with it and not digging it. Season 1 was okay but generic, Season 2 was better but the ending was a letdown, and now this one just seemed to jump the shark. It's become a teen soap opera/sitcom, and now there's...
Russians? In the heartland of America? Come on.
Very disappointing. 4.5/10

Dark Season 2- German series about a small town and themes of time travel, incest, murder, secrets, and fate. The storyline is very convoluted, so if you havent seen Season 1 you'll be totally lost. The acting is good and it gets intense, but lacks any sort of humor (hey it's made by Germans) and the theme is well... dark. It's kind of a grown up version of Stranger Things even though it's very, very different. 8/10

La peste (TV Series 2018– ) - IMDb A Spanish historical series sety in the 16th century. It's a grimy, dirty show about a murder mystery and a black plague sweeping the city. You've got the Inquisition, Christian schism, assassins, dirt, and more dirt. Not bad, though somewhat shallow 7/10

The Boys (TV Series 2019– ) - IMDb) I gotta admit I read the comic series so I know how it's going to turn out. Basically if you liked Preacher then this is more of the same, except its about superheroes who do bad. Much better than most of the Marvel DC stuff thats on TV, though they did make some changes (in the comics, the boys actually have superpowers, but they dont seem to have any here). I only watched the first episode, but its intriguing so far.

Watched the first two "The Boys". Both me and the wife liked it. Certainly seems like the boys have superpowers, the first A-Train scene is crazy.

If your watching Yellowstone, it is getting crazy. I like it but that is where I am from so I might be biased. Plus my wife like it because she says Costner sits a good horse.

OK I binged the rest of the Boys over the weekend, and it seems only one of them has superpowers. But then again based on the ending, its highly likely the might get some in the near future. All in all, a great show.

I would agree, great show. Brutal ending, no way I saw that coming. Leaves so many questions.

I love the graphic novel (I like just about anything by Garth Ennis) and while they've changed the story in many ways for TV the important bits are there, or seem to be on the way.

Yeah, I agree with both of you- the changes from the source material are substantial, but the good news for us who read the comics means there will still be lots of surprises next season. The twist in the comic book finale will definitely be totally different, thats for sure.

I like what they did with the Hughie character too- he seems more complex and assertive in this adaptation, whereas he was totally naive in the comic book.

Just finished season one of The Boys, Gotta say I loved it. Homelander is beyond menacing with his instant switch from everybodies friend to insane killer and back. Cant wait for th enext season. Just hope they dont do the usual make 3 seasons then drop the show because its too popular and they dont want to give anyone raises.
