All Purpose OSCAR THREAD

All things considered, the show had a more or less low-key vibe. Normally it takes about two hours for the numbing effect to set in, but despite host Jimmy Kimmel’s best efforts, Sunday’s telecast started to feel a bit languid and low-energy far earlier
TV Review: The 90th Academy Awards Ceremony on ABC – Variety

Kimmel is getting good reviews, but I did not see that, I thought that he was a big part of the problem.

At some point they will mind that they are supposed to stay out of view so that the town can sell their wares.

It's all about the money. As long as white male leads pull in twice that of the others, no one will care. Besides, the women had dresses to advertise.

Well, I thought it was boring as heck...turned it off after the short Roseanne clip...the highlight of the night...

Wow, I had such a good time watching the Oscars, I missed this whiney thread up till now. Oh well...

Isn't it funny? The OP watched just to see what he could get angry about. I'm surprised he hasn't raged about Frances McDormand's speech yet. :)

I watched Call Me By Your Name instead- only tuned in at the end to see the big awards.

PRESENTERS:

So including the host 8/38 were white men for 21%....a lot on the low side......representative of America would have been 31%.

White men are supposed to suck it up of course, we are not supposed to mind.

Yeah, we white guys sure have a tough life. Man, it's just soooo hard to be us white guys.

Well, in any case, I'm very glad the Oscars were on last night so you had something to be pissed off about. ;)

Meanwhile, Black Panther is close to hitting the $1 billion mark worldwide...that's got to really get your goat...

Have not watched in years,, It's just a big rich hollywood circle jerk..

djl

I am not sure if this is the final number but Variety has the audience down 19% from last year to an new all time low.

Oscars: Early Ratings Down From 2017 Telecast – Variety

Hollywood should take note that they are losing America through a combination of forgetting what their job is and conducting poor quality work.

They did fail--Kobe the rapist winning an Oscar proves that.

If the movie was great that is fine, I dont go with folks who insist that one bad act or more often one alleged bad act should ruin a life.

This is not who we are.

What was up with all that time used to honor Tom Petty?

These are the Oscars not the Grammys.

I smelled desperation.

Yep...they should stick to what they know...acting...

Did anyone see Whoopie's hideous dress?

I actually watched some of the Oscar's this year. Tried tuning in for the big awards and kept missing them. Some guy tried to make a "Wall" joke that was a bomb and Kimmell tried to score some weed off of Spielberg. That is about all I remember.

Telling a wide variety of stories, not just the ones that they like the politics of, not just the ones that promote their UTOPIA.

UTOPIA Sales is not their business, if that is all they are willing to do then we will go elsewhere, because that gets boring real fast.

Lefty Slate:
At the end of the evening Dunaway and Beatty presented the Oscar, with no hiccups, to The Shape of Water, an undramatic end to an undramatic evening

Lefty MotherJones:
11:47pm: The Shape of Water won Best picture which whatever fine, but I thought Three Billboards was going to win which means I got four awards wrong tonight. 20/24! I watched this whole boring Oscars and didn’t even get 21 right!!!!!!

Interesting:
Perhaps more alarming than the ratings decline is the fact that social chatter surrounding the event dipped this year as well. According to Fizziology, social conversation dropped 28 percent compared to last year—although it’s likely that this discrepancy can be attributed to last year’s best picture flub, which was practically engineered to drive breathless tweets and Facebook posts. Conversation largely centered on films that represented inclusion and diversity, Fizziology notes, with Guillermo del Toro, Coco, and Jordan Peele/Get Out driving the most conversations.

I saw ten minutes - it didn't take long to hear gushing multi-cultural tears over Mexico and their great culture (coco) and then had to be tortured by the song "Call Me By My Name". I tuned out. When I later heard that simple-minded black folk "horror" movie "Get Out" won best original screen play I nearly spit out my morning coffee.

I should also add I missed most of the awards to see a horrible (and PC) film: Black Panther. I couldn't believe (nor could my very left friend) how anybody could think that film is worth more than 2 stars. What a wasted evening.

Yeah, they are a bit predictable...and the show is lie 4 hours. No way could I watch that.

I might see Shape of Water someday. Although, to be honest, it's not my cup of tea. I do plan to see Get Out. It looks funny and scary at the same time. Kind of cool. And, like I said, Three Billboards is right up my alley. I love that kind of thing. But, I have to be in the right mood for such a dark flick.

wife and i watched it 3 Billboards on PPV sunday afternoon

it was really good....

great cast, great writing....our type of movie

a bit dark....and the ending leaves you with a few questions...wont spoil it for those who wish to see

saw Dunkirk, and 3 Billboards....both were really good movies for vary different reasons

We hear that a lot about Lady Bird, that it is vastly overrated, that it is basically a pretty uninteresting low budget indie flick that somehow became the darling of the Intelligentsia, which goes to show how useless the intelligentsia are now.

And the Shape of Water was an interesting film, a nice twist of the Creature from the Black Lagoon, but if that was the "best" film this year then Hollywood is in worse shape than I thought. Some have enlightened me by noting many of the sub-texts I missed: the sadistic white male, sexually repressive, protagonist vs. the mute (Hispanic), gay, and black woman...although it was hard to miss the gratuitous scene where the diner white guy discriminates against the black couple and is hostile to the "pass" made by the gay fellow.

It's hard for me to believe that at least one of the other best picture nominees were not better than this (I have not seen them).

Just wanted to say "thanks" for taking one for the team. I caught a little here and there, but appreciated finding out about the highs and lows.

Phantom Thread is amazing but the people who made it made zero effort to win, they signaled that they did not want to win, one assumes because it does not represent the politics that Hollywood is pushing now, and as we all know that is everything. The Academy had been saying for weeks that they were not going to do a political show, because the town is reaching burnout, morale is bad......but damn, that was a super political isolationist show. They made it very clear that they have not one interest in representing all of America, but in there minds they were restrained.

But the worst part was that it was a depressing slog, which celebrated Hollywoods condescension born of ignorance more than anything else.

Looks like all the right people won: Francis McD for her role as that mom whose kid got murdered. Gary O for his portrayal of Winston Churchill. I'm not sure I agree with the mom winning best supporting for her I, Tonya. WTF is that about anyway? I jest.

Rockwell for that child-murder movie getting the Best supporting actor seems about right. In fact, I need to see that flick. I bet its good.

Did "Get Out" win best pic?

I was asked twice on Saturday night if I wanted to see I Tonya.

I said, no I lived it, I don't want to see her on screen.

The day Tanya was flying back to the Olympics to compete, she was leaving the Portland airport, just as I was arriving.

What a mess she made of the whole place. The attention was fully undeserved.
