Jim Nabors dead; star best known as Gomer Pyle was 87 | Fox News

Jim Nabors, the star who played the clumsy deputy sheriff Gomer Pyle on “The Andy Griffith Show” and eventually starred in his own spinoff, has died. He was 87.
Nabors' husband, Stan Cadwallader, told the Associated Press his longtime partner had died peacefully at home in Hawaii by his side.
Cadwallader says Nabors' health had been declining for the past year.
His immune system also was suppressed after he underwent a liver
transplant about 20 years ago
He was a funny character on those shows, which aired when I was very young.

He had quite the voice too.

Whoever wrote that article was confused. Neighbors was a mechanic in Mayberry. Don Knotts was the deputy.

Neighbors was a big part of my childhood. He’ll be seriously missed

Actually, Neighbors as Gomer Pyle:

A) Worked as a filling station attendant (Wally was the mechanic, though the situation did get a little muddier in later episodes)
B) Did serve as a deputy in several episodes, whenever Andy and Barney needed more manpower.

However, to your larger point, it does appear as if the writer confused Neighbors with Don Knotts.

Gosh The Andy Griffith show was something I looked forward to every week. My kids grew up watching the re-runs. All the characters were special. How many seasons did it take for Sheriff Taylor to finally ask Helen to marry him? I know it took forever. The show was wholesome enforcing the importance of good family values and love thy neighbor.

In the character of Gomer Pyle, Jim Neighbors had an expression he often used. "Shazam!"

RIP Mr. Neighbors

Damn. As a kid I loved Gomer Pyle. That and Get Smart never failed to make me laugh.

I've been binge-watching the show on Netflix.

I was just listening to Gilbert Gottfried's podcast with Ronnie Schell, they were going to try to get Jim on the show. Shame, he was a good guy, never a bad word about him. Until recently, he had the largest macadamia farm in the world which made him a millionaire many times over. He deeded his vast estate on Oahu to the state for when he died, they are going to make a public park from his land.

Real bummer, he was a good one.

his gospel voice was amazing....

and his character Gomer Pyle USMC was one of my dad's favorites

another part of my childhood is gone....

Surprise, surprise, surprise.

Also, it is spelled "Nabors" and I have absolutely NO idea why my mind didn't correct that.

Ron Howard's father Rance died just last week.

He was on the show a few times as well.

There are so few left.

Making people laugh with out going blue is an art that has been lost for the most part.
