‘Lord of the Rings’ TV Series Eyed, With Amazon a Potential Home | TVLine

Has Amazon found the Game of Thrones it’s been seeking?

A Lord of the Rings TV series is in the very early development stages, according to The Hollywood Reporter, from Warner Bros. Television, whose feature-film division produced the LOTR movies. There’s no writer attached to the project yet — Warner Bros. is still looking to nail down the rights from the estate of book author J.R.R. Tolkien — but Amazon Studios has already emerged as an potential home.

Ugh. Please no. Come up with something original. LOTR has been (over)done with 6 movies already. There's plenty of epic fantasy books that are still un-filmed like The Worm Ouroboros (better than LOTR by a mile) and the Chronicles of Amber.

That sounds... absolutely horrible.

The actual LotR films were pretty good I think. The Hobbit films were an abomination, at the speed of drying paint.

Really tired of this thing of the last 10 years where studios are just remaking everything over and over again. I mean, LotR finished less than 15 years ago, and the Hobbit only finished a couple years ago. And we're rehashing this already? Can someone just have an original idea, please?

As with so much of America today figuring out if it is cant or if it is rather wont gets tricky.

I don't know, but I thought reading it was wonderful and the films a waste of time. But nothing could in any way compete with having it read to me as a child before bed.

I would watch this if, and only if, they got Guillermo del Toro to direct. His early drafts of The Hobbit looked incredible, and I would dearly love to see that.

The early reports are factually incorrect in that the rights to both THE HOBBIT and THE LORD OF THE RINGS do not belong to the Tolkien Estate. They have long belonged to Saul Zaentz. The rights to Tolkiens other writings belong to the Tolkien Estate. There has been no reversion of those rights to the Estate.

It is probably ten years too soon for a reboot of LOTR. The films are too recent and were too popular for a TV reboot.

They could do a series based on other things from the books but now used in the movies such as the War in the North for Erebor during the War of the Ring or the effort by Balin to retake Moria. You could do a eight episode series for either of those events and it would be new material using a familiar world and that might work.

You could do ten years of episodes if anyone could get the rights to THE SILMARILLION and the other writings of Tolkien but Christopher Tolkien - who is firmly in charge of the Estate - has said he will never sell those rights for any amount or under any conditions.

Right now, it is not clear what is intended so speculation is all we have at the moment. Hopefully, it will be cleared up in the coming days or weeks.

I just looked up The Chronicles of Amber. These books are far too short to be considered "epic fantasy".

The Amber novels consists of 10 books, while LOTR is 3. And the definition of epic fantasy isnt the number of books but the theme, which is set in a fully realized world.

What is this, a sitcom starring Sam and Rosie?

Would love to see the Belgariad and the Mallorean by David Eddings be turned into a move or TV series...so much material there, and all of it really good. I agree with you, enough with the LOTR. Tres done.

This may be off topic...
Speaking about strikes.
You have teacher strikes.
- Pilot strikes
-screen writers/guild strike.
I understand they want better pays and such.
What I'm saying these writers should come up with new ideas for any types of stories. I've seen too many remakes.
Compare the movies shown on Turner Classic Movies(TCM)...very original and well written and produced.
Today ?
Same or similar plots,in other words the viewer knows what's coming up the pike.
I think PoS is spot on. Get behind the typewriters/computers and think.

I read the first few decades ago and enjoyed them. They just might make a good series on film.

The more I think about the Tolkien angle, and who wants the rights, one thing keeps coming through and that is that Jeff Bezos has more money that God. His fortune and net worth are north of $50 billion dollars and might be as much as $75B. Christopher Tolkien has always insisted he will never sell the film rights to THE SILMARILLION but he is very aged and might be willing to sell them for a ton of money. And there is easily five or eight years of series material in that book. Just the tale of Beren and Luthien alone could fill two years.

I wonder if Bezos offered to buy those rights - or even buy everything that the Estate controls - for some ridiculous offer like 250 million plus a healthy royalty on everything they produce over say a ten year period - if that would be one of those Godfather type offers that you simply cannot refuse?

Lets face it, Bezos could drop half a billion and not be impacted by it at all. It would be like you and I spending a grand or two.

I look forward to more information about this.
