The Orville

It usually takes a couple of seasons for a show settle down and find its rhythm. Too bad that most shows don't get that chance.

Haven't seen it yet though I plan to. I'm a huge Trek fan (re watching TNG right now in fact) and am wondering how it will compare.

You'll be pleasantly surprised.

This is what Ive been hearing: If SM had made the show a half hour in length it would be good instead of slow and boring.

Is that right?
Do you remember where you heard that?

Having grown up near Orrville, Ohio, home of Smuckers jams and jellies (and milk, cottage cheese and ice cream, etc. although I think they sold off the dairy part of the business) I was curious about how Seth McFarlane had come up with the name, so I watched a couple of the episodes last night.

It has a very "Star Trek: Next Generation" type feel, with a Will Ryker type character (McFarlane himself), a Deanna Troi character (his ex-wife, the XO), a Data type character, and a Worf type character. And they throw in a jelly being character who talks for good measure, and an alien Vulcan/Klingon female who looks like a 12 year old but is as strong as an ox.

The captain and his ex get into arguments at the most inappropriate times, which you can imagine would really happen, but they are a bit overdone and go on for too long. Not subtle enough. If "The Orville" didn't try so hard to be a comedy, it would be more like "Galaxy Quest", still a parody that wouldn't have to remind you that it is a parody. Enjoyable for Trek fans, nonetheless.

Do they have a Scotty character?

It looked good, I added it to my watch list. Thanks for the heads up.

It sucked... Seriously, 500 year old cultural references being thrown around like they happened yesterday... Dumb people in positions that demand intelligence... Utterly unprofessional behavior from people who's jobs demand professionalism... I know that it's a parody, but at least TRY to make it sound like it wasn't written by group of jr. high kids...

Anachronisms are hard to avoid in a futuristic show we can relate to. As far as I know, the juvenile slapstick humor is a Seth MaCFarlane thing, I have never seen Family Guy.

Are you kidding? Episode 3 out treked Star Trek. loved it

Saw episode 4 and thought it was the best yet. I really liked the storyline (classic Trek) and the ending was great (including an awesome cameo!) ;)

The production values for the show are really great, and the music is great too.

The who has been stellar, def out Trekking Discovery's crap.

If that show lasts more than a month I will be depressed.

Have you watched the more recent episodes? I feel like the show's definitely been getting better with each new episode. They're onto something here, and it has a nice atmosphere. They've taken the Trek universe and de-cluttered it, while providing a dose of juvenile absurdist humor and fun - keeps the show from feeling too wooden.

I only watched the first episode. Won't watch more.

It seemed to me to be a cross between the original Star Trek and Blazing Saddles .

Parts of it make me groan and look away (lame humor), but there are some laughs, some decent plots, and REALLY good FX.

Some bits I really love... a touch of real humanity many versions of ST could have used, like cupholders on the bridge, and trying to feed a cactus to Bortas when they find out he can eat anything...

I binged watch it this weekend on Hulu and really enjoyed it. It is an interesting mix of comedy and serious topics. Kind of like M*A*S*H, though not in the same league.

I'm all caught up and i think it's great.

My favorite bit:

Made me laugh really hard.

Yeah I know right? From the moment he said "now you have to get me back" I thought "Oh, this is not going to end well for you..." :)

When he woke up missing a leg, I nearly fell off the couch laughing. OMG, that was a good one.
