So I was having a discussion the other day with a relative about a relatively significant historical event. Afterwards I thought "has Hollywood made a movie about this? A quick search found not even a documentary. I began thinking of other major events and realized a dearth of Hollywood films. It seems Hollywood isn't interested in a loT of cool stuff that I think would make good movies.

Three suggestions

1) The War of the Pacific.

In 1870 an obscure trade dispute reveals secret alliances and fans ethnic and former colonial disputes and the war is on. Chile defeats the combined militaries of Peru and Bolivia taking the entire Bolivian coast and a portion of Peru as spoils. This actually might make a better miniseries

2) the B-36 crash in British Columbia

In 1950 a B-36 bomber crashed in a remote region of Northern Canada, five crewman were killed and the plane, which was carrying a nuclear weapon dropped it over Canada to reduce weight. The Canadians weren't told at the time what had happened with the bomb although they knew about the exercise and rescued the crew after a severe battle with the elements.

3) the Falklands war

I have found some films about the Falklands war, but one of them the war was just a setting and not the topic, and others were semi documentaries. Which is weird since this remains one of the most studied conflicts in history and is the only naval conflict since World War Two fought between two powers that were approaching parity.

In 1982 a faltering junta government in Argentina (after unsuccessfully trying to provoke neighboring Chile into a war in 1978 for the same reason) decides to launch a diversionary war while simultaneously ending one of the longest running international land disputes, and invades the British Controlled Falkland Islands, the British, after some early setbacks in the war and several ship sinkings by Argentine fighters, retake the islands.

Any other historical events for Hollywood to try something that hasn't been done yet?

Putin's decision to invade Ukraine, the process of organizing an alliance to give Saddam the feeling of impunity in negotiations with the UN concerning the whereabouts of his wmd or the Kremlin waging if nonlinear war including his support of the mass murderer Assad.

Excellent question, I want to see a movie about the invention of chinese gun powder, the politics that surrounded keeping it secrecy for so long should be chocked full of drama.

More movies with a Russian focus would be something I would pay to see

The 1886 Chicago Haymarket Massacre and trial which resulted.

Not really a movie, but a miniseries or even a TV show for the following:

1) Hernando Cortez conquers the Aztec Empire- a huge watershed event in history.

2) the Punic Wars- the first world war between the two superpowers of the ancient world: Rome and Carthage. Two of the greatest generals in history too: Hannibal and Scipio.

3) Rome versus the barbarians. The closing years of the empire of the west with Rome's last great general: Stilicho.

4) Mongol Invasions- nuff said.

5) Yugoslavian Civil War.

Some of those would be good, although I wonder if any miniseries about the conquest of the Yucatán would be accurate. We seem to have reverted to "the noble savage" view of indigenous peoples and so it would probably depict Cortes as the embodiment of evil while the many atrocities the Aztecs committed against the lesser tribes (like kidnapping people and cutting out their living hearts as a sacrifice to the sun god, which made the other people in the region support Cortez) would be airbrushed over.

Well cable TV has made great strides in adding nuance to shows with more realistic characters. I think if HBO, Showtime, AMC or Netflix would be ideal to present historical TV series with no holds barred stuff.
