‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Hints Klingons Modeled on Trump Voters: Racial Purity

I just watch the movies now. T.V. Nex Gen and the original were great. Voyager ok. The rest sucked.

Next Generation and Deep Space Nine for me.

DS9 just didn't do it for me. Anyway... the new movies rock.

Yeah, I enjoyed them. I know they are pew pew lens flair, but with the exception of the first film in 1979, you can't really say that the Abrams trilogy is out of whack.

God.. This new Startrek is going to kill the franchise. They are making it CBS stream $$$$ services exclusive. They are totally gutting the honor story of the klingons. The klingons look like skinny little pipsqueeks in razor armor. And I guess their entire culture is supposed to represent the extremist minority of Trump supporters. Way to kill my favorite franchise in the world.... Beam me, the ****, out.

Thanks. (dang you obi wan!) God I hope that they're not truly going to do what is being suggested. Star Trek is one of my favorite series. I've liked all of them, tv show or movie.

And yes, Star Trek always has had political points made in it. Never minded it mainly because the points were often subtly woven into the story. It wasn't in your face. In your face politics tends to put people off far more than subtlety. So I'll definitely continue to watch it for now as long as they stick to that subtle points. If they start getting in your face then this may be the first star trek series that I will not watch. :(

And yeah...the new Klingons are imo a bit of a put off because of the drastic change in appearance (particularly since they look more like orcs out of Lord of the Rings). I like things sticking to cannon as much as possible. Going off of the script too much tends to annoy me.

Discovery should introduce us to altogether new species. I think Star Trek has already exhausted what can be done with Vulcans and Klingons. The idea of detaching oneself from all emotions and doing everything according to pure logic is interesting but it has been explored enough. And the Klingons, a people that live by a code of honor, who relish the “hunt” and physical prowess is symbolic of many such cultures that exist here on Earth. But now it is time to introduce some new species. The 1990s series tried to do this by introducing the assimilationist Borg, the omnipotent and meddling Q continuum, the xenophobic Changeling “Link”. I don’t think these groups have been explored enough either.
Another fascinating idea is that in the future humanity itself could fracture into different species that have fundamentally different characteristics, while still claiming Earth as their homeworld. This idea was somewhat explored in the Star Trek film Insurrection though it wasn’t about human beings. In fact it would be more accurate or at least scientifically plausible to make the various “humanoid” species that look basically like Homo Sapiens with bumps on their foreheads or pointy ears as merely the result of the fracturing of humanity through mutations and evolution, rather than to make them extraterrestrials with a different origin. I think superior Sci Fi is where is it more plausible and not that fantastic. That's suppose to be the main distinction between Sci Fi and Fantasy

Next Generation and Deep Space Nine for me.

Deep space 9 was ok but lots of Sisco and Kira's acting seem really forced. But Quark and Odo pull it off. And they coulda toned down on the religion stuff by about 50%. Oh ya O'brain was good too.

Aaron Harberts and Gretchen J. Berg spoke about how the 2016 presidential election influenced their writing of the new sci-fi series. Specifically, the real-life “times have become more of a mirror” reflecting the root perspectives fueling the conflict in Discovery.

“The Klingons are going to help us really look at certain sides of ourselves and our country,” explained Harberts. “Isolationism is a big theme. Racial purity is a big theme. The Klingons are not the enemy, but they do have a different view on things.”

I see them post like 20 different versions and links to the same story every few days. Like they are testing out different compositions of the same article.

Hopefully the extreme left people that think Trump is about racial purity will be so damn crazy they make an interesting story without it blatantly being a Trump bash.

They've only released two episodes and haven't developed any of the characters very much yet.

If the story lines start getting tiresome with an excess of political agenda driven messaging I'll stop watching, as I'm sure many other will also.

I wonder in which time period this story lines fits in the cannon. Based on the tech, I think it is quite a bit after 'Enterprise', but before Kirk's century.

Odd to note that earlier tech, i.e. Enterprise and Discovery, comes off far better than Kirk's era, but I know that's related to production budgets and the year they were filmed.

I'd much rather that the left leaves their politics out of this series, and we get high quality and interesting stories, rather than political messaging, but we'll have to see what they do with it.

You liked the new movies? Ugh.

Lots of special effects to deflect from the lack of a real plot and bad acting.

It's set 10 years before Kirk in the same timeline

I don't know if I heard this right, but didn't someone try to canonize why the Klingons looked like they did in ToS compared to TNG?

If so, what the hell do we do now?

Yeah DS9 started it and ENT clarified it due to genetic modification

Yes they did. Obviously Gene was settled with the way the new Klingons looked. It was lacking before because of lack of technology with original Klingons and effeciency of time. So they made a plot that all the humany looking klingons were pretty much halfbreeds that were meant to interact with the humans or something like that. It was basically a one time excuse to be like "This is what the original Klingons SHOULD have looked like" I really think Gene would be pissed of to think his Klingons were turned into Urik Hai warriors.

Basicly instead of Kirk hating Klingons because a small portion of them made bad choices they are turning it into the whole species is rabid ethnocentrism and gonna explain how they were "tamed"

It's total garbage the main character is terrible it's not really believable. The only episode I saw was the most ridiculous storyline. And the Klingons are ridiculous they look like those bad guys from Lord of the Rings they can't talk because the stupid prosthetic makeup. And as you said the Klingons were all about honor not purity.

I'm a Trekkie my trekkie days started when I was just five years old during the first airing of the Next Generation. I started watching the original series I liked it. I even watched the cartoon. I lost interest in Voyager I lost interest in Deep Space Nine and I also lost interest in Enterprise but they had good times.

I'm not a huge fan of the latest movies they really mucked up the series and the timeline.

To me the new movies seemed more like young stars being too happy they took a part. Or got a part. Spock was pretty good. And ahura was 50% believable. But I also watch stuff online of people volenteering to make startrek episodes for free and it is MUCH better.

*sigh* i guess i have to watch it even though i dont want to.

Mixed feelings. Ep1 & 2, sorta meh. Ep3, good. 4, about half-meh again. Spore drive, seriously? Before the series ends they'll have to have an explanation why spore drive doesn't become the drive-of-choice and Kirk went where no man has gone etc with plain old warp drive.

Trek started dying with Enterprise. Nemesis was the nail in the coffin. The re-imagining by JJ Abhrams I don't even consider cannon, just another universe that's actually irrelevant, albeit popcorn entertainment.

What they need to do is stop this sentimental crap about The Original Series era. I am tired of hearing about Klingons and Romulans. I just can't care anymore. It's been done to death and we don't need 10 quantum universe versions of this storyline. Can we please make a series that takes place 80 years after Nemesis? Or 150 years? Or 500 years? I don't care, anything that is new and introduces whole new concepts to the trek universe?

Mind you, I loved Michelle Yeoh as captain... but I am also tired of this apocalypse/war theme. Instead of upping the stakes by destroying one ship or 50 ships, how about we get back to philosophically and morally interesting writing that captures the imagination? If you want to critique the current politics you can do it by creating dramatic controversy, just like TOS did.
