We have all but stopped going out to see films in the theaters. Lazy is one reason, but the major reason is that it has been our experience that there will, and has been, someone who cannot detach from social madia for two or so hours. The last movie we saw had notices ad nauseum regarding cell phones during the show. What is the experience of the frequenters? There are one or two movies that we would like to take in at the theater for the sound and large screen.

I used to frequently go to the movies and became disenchanted with the behavior of people in the theater. I want to go full Scaramooch on them killing the people who talked during the film, answered their stupid phones, or just generally did not understand that watching a film is not an audience participation event. So I bought a giant state of the art TV set and settle for that most times. I do occasionally go to see something that befits the cinema experience on the giant screen but carefully go a few days after opening at 11 AM when only old farts like myself are there and sit rows apart from each other so their hearing aids do not pick up ambient noise.

Eh? What's that you say, sonny?
I think we are going to see "Dunkirk" during the week in a matinee. Is that still a word?

My first IMAX, IIRC correctly, was 'To Fly' at 6 flags Grest America in Gurnee, IL in the 80s. I would take the physics kids there on a special field trip they'd have every May. Now they're wearing the electronic computer PACs to plot the measurements on a ride.

They banned coins on your hand for the Great Drop, as they would levitate, because they'd fly off and hit people at great speeds when the ride suddenly stopped .

I'm surprised these multiplexes can stay open. I think it's great for date night, I guess. But with cable and Amazon Prime and all the rest, one can rent most anything. And does one really need to see a movie the first week of its release and spend $30 for the privilege? I'd much rather rent it at home on my movie theater recliners and pop my own popcorn. Has nothing to do with social media and everything to do with creature comfort.

It's not just social media, it's full on telephone conversations, attempts to share the film via skype (or record it for bootleg)...and then the other bad behaviors that existed before cellphone (loud conversations, kids too young for the movie whining and crying to their parents, people drinking or doing drugs and acting accordingly, etc.)

It's just not worth the extra expense when you can see the movies when they come out on video via cable access to HBO etc.

Like you, we haven't gone to a movie in years. We used to go a lot. I believe the last film I saw in theater was Avatar.

There have been several IMAX films that I would have liked to see. But, I'll just wait for V/R versions to be released.

I have seen three movies in the theaters this year: Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Wonder Woman, War for the Planet of the Apes. All good blockbusters. But generally I do see at least one person on their phone throughout the show.

With the big reclining seats and the good food movies are fun again.

It is too bad there are so few good things to see these days.

Like cable tons of crap to wade through.

I will usually watch it in the theatre if its a spectacle like movie- the type that needs a good sound system and deserves to be seen on the big screen. For more intimate stuff like dramas and low key character studies, I usually wait until the DVD streaming version is available.

I live right next to a mall and their cinemas are state of the art- half the theatres have the new Dolby Atmos system while another mall a few miles away has IMAX. However, I pick and choose carefully which movies will warrant that splurge- usually summer blockbuster movies like sci-fi, superheroes, or massive war epics like Dunkirk will do the trick for me.

I also usually watch the first showing on a weekday- where I am the premieres are usually on Wednesday, that way the theatre is largely empty, I can raise the arm rests and stretch out on three seats to relax.

I haven't stepped foot in a theater since the mid-90s and will never go again. I have no interest in sitting in a theater with people kicking the back of your chair, talking on their phones and making a mess. Movies come out on Bluray in 2-3 months anyhow, I can wait and enjoy them in the comfort of my own home. Screw theaters.
