'True Blood' Star Nelsan Ellis Dies at 39 | Hollywood Reporter

The guy totally nailed the character he is most remembered by: Lafayette Reynolds.

On True Blood, Lafayette was a short order cook at Merlotte's. In the books, he was killed off, but because Ellis made him such an enjoyable character, he survived in the series.

"We were extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Nelsan Ellis," HBO said in a statement. "Nelsan was a long-time member of the HBO family whose groundbreaking portrayal of Lafayette will be remembered fondly within the overall legacy of True Blood. Nelsan will be dearly missed by his fans and all of us at HBO."

True Blood creator, Alan Ball said: "Nelsan was a singular talent whose creativity never ceased to amaze me. Working with him was a privilege."

How sad! Lafayette was part of the reason I continued to even watch the show when it started to slip.

Yeah. I turns out he had some issues. Another victim to the scourge of addiction, it seems.

On Monday, though, Saines released a new statement showing the story to be much darker and complicated than that. The heart failure was caused by Ellis’s attempt to stop abusing alcohol on his own, which had been a lifelong but private struggle for the actor. The subsequent withdrawal led to his death.
