and I mean hard rock

so that eliminates most of my favorites such as the Southern Blues rock of the Allman Brothers Band (my vote for the best band the USA has produced), the electric Bluegrass melding into psychedelic sound of the Grateful Dead, or the raw punk of the Ramones.

for me, the best pure hard rock band the USA produced was these guys

Alice in Chains
Pantera
Clutch
Deftones
Dio

Prolly Alice in Chains or Pantera if you're talking best, as in most successful, widely known, lauded by music critics while retaining widespead appeal, I'd say Alice in Chains.

I bet 20 years from now, none of those will be really remembered. Mountain will be. Felix Pappalardi is on most lists of the top rock bassists of all time. Plus he was a triple threat-a wonderful vocalist as well as a songwriter and producer. West's guitar skills are at the very top of the heap

I think AIC is more famous than Mountain and will hold onto longevity. But, I think we're also not considering the most obvious answer of Metallica being the #1 Hard Rock band of all times.

that would have been my second choice for American HR bands. They certainly have longevity as a plus.

Metallica's name holds weight in almost all metal discussions.

edit: not sure if you want to separate metal from hard rock

yeah and we can decide whether "metal" and Hard Rock are the same thing.

Well, metal can be traced back to even bands like the Kinks, who were decidedly not metal. Black Sabbath is widely and should be, unanimously considered the first metal band. I think in order to be metal, you must embrace thematic darkness to a degree, whereas to be hard rock, you just have to play heavier chords and stripped down rock rooted in blues, similar to what the Black Keys do.

So, in my opinion all metal is hard rock but not all hard rock is metal.

Already mentioned but black sabbath I think holds ONE of metal banners. Metallica was good till they sold out but I will be an Iron Maiden's fan.

Uh, could be off my rocker, but...the Eagles? Bob Sieger and the silver bullets?

One legendary thrash metal band and another great band of the new wave of American metal.

It really depends on your definition, Winston was close IMO

I'm just going to throw another contender out there

These guys have to be in the discussion too -

One other band to consider -

Steppenwolf - Black Sabbath - Black Oak Arkansas............ were a few of the good ones.

No doubt about it - Led Zeppelin

I'm sorry but... nobody really knows about "Mountain". Dio, Pantera & Alice in Chains are way more popular internationally.

I believe many of you are missing this part of TD's op.

So that knocks out quite a few rather obvious suggestions.

Hendrix gets my vote unless TD considers him more of a solo enigma than a full on band.
Which I could agree with if that's how he wants to proceed.

Also, if grunge bands are going to be considered you absolutely can't ignore Soundgarden.

Let me think on this for a while.

Early Van Halen (first three albums) needs a mention...

Jeez...

Nirvana
Aerosmith
ZZ Top
Alice Cooper
Frank Zappa
Gun's n Roses

Lol, seeing as how Alice In Chains formed THIRTY years ago, I'd say you're mistaken. ;)
