What the hell happened to country music?

I never really cared for country music past the early 70's. After rhinestone cowboy it was all downhill. Really after they started calling it Country instead of Western.

I don't know if the younger generation enjoys this modern crap? It is all about parties. And I know that country has always been a little 1 dimensional. But it has not always been as I original as it is now. I guess it is just more commercialized music.

It is like they combined country and rap. And we all know that gets you crap.

The country you hear on the radio is 98% crap. But there is good country out there, you just have to look for it.

Jason Isbell
Drive-By Truckers
Sturgill Simpson
Ryan Adams
John Moreland

etc.

For those who think all country music sucks...

Rock tried the same crap in the 90's, outside a few bands no one can name them, they fizzled out.

Huh? 90s rock is great and many of them are on regular rotation. Radiohead, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Beck, Blur, Soundgarden, The Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam... they all have at least 5 classic songs.

I was speaking of the 90's attempts at merging rock and rap, not the alternative rock and regular rock which people remember. Heck to date very few even from other decades are remembered who tried to mix rap and rock, two notable exceptions being the beastie boys and lincoln park.

IMO, Country is the new White Pop, while Pop has morphed into something most older white people no longer like at all.

Ah, yeah I agree. Rock was in a dark place during the late 90s/early 00s. Remember Crazy Town? :2razz:

Country to me feels like pop/rock of the 70's that I have heard. Wasn't alive in the 70's so I am no expert on it, but that is about the closest comparison I can think of.

Wow, I didn't know he was big there. The UK and ireland kind of shuns most crappy modern American trends in music, although there's a rap scene I've heard.
I want to see Ireland pretty bad. It's my #1 country I'd like to visit.

Jimmy Rodgers was very popular in Scotland.

Nothing like some input from Europe on an American tradition.

Ever heard of records and radio? I played guitar in a country band for three years. What musical experience do you have?

Country music has always been about 3 things drinking, working hard/America, and promiscuity/infidelity

I don't see much difference other than the style

And mothers, jails, god, death, farms, trucks and trains. Here is the definitive country lyric

My momma got drunk and landed in the jailhouse
Things down on the farm ain't been the same
When they let my momma out the jailhouse
she drove her goddamned truck into a train.
