I would have leaned toward Gracie Slick, but she kind of petered out in the early 80's. So, my vote for top vocalist goes to Ann Wilson. Her voice is as powerful today as it was back in 1977.

Then:

Now-ish:

Yup, Anne Wilson tops my list, too. Her voice is unreal.

In my top 10, also have to add Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, Grace Slick, Janis Joplin and Chrissie Hynde.

Honorable mention to Josh Stone

Not "rock" but great voices:

Kristen Kelly

Jenifer Nettles

Speaking of Gracie...here's the second most powerful female vocal performance I have ever seen/heard.

But...nothing has ever come close to comparing to what I consider the best ever female vocalist performance of all time. Barr none.

I'd have to agree with Calamity on best pipes, I've always loved Ann Wilson's voice. My favorite though is Alison Krauss.

“Do you know the singer called Alison Krauss?” Adele asked the crowd, according to Entertainment Weekly, before kicking off a performance of her song “Don’t You Remember” that seemed inspired by Krauss’s band Union Station.

“Country and bluegrass aren’t that big in England, so usually I say that and get like five yells,” Adele went on to say, having just wrapped the European dates on her tour, “but I’m obsessed with her. Not like stalker vibes -- but almost.”
