Keep seeing these threads about best guitarists and they always end up with some strange choices but I wanted to actually see which tracks people actually used to help make their decisions.

So, post your evidence for discussion please!

Disclaimer: obviously one track isn't representative of a guitarist's whole life's output.

My favourite live Albert Collins performance

The kick at the end of the Thrill is Gone in this version is just guitar playing ecstasy - wish he played that section much longer.

Apparently, Hendrix is dead....

I love this version of River of Tears by Clapton. Not just for his guitar work (not his most exciting) but for the total package. Steve Gadd on drums, Billy Preston on the Hammond, Andy, its just a great piece.

Hands down (in my book) the best. Featuring Terry Kath and Chicago at Tanglewood, 1970.

Magical guitar solo in front of a reportedly astonished crowd who had yet to fully appreciate the band, the sound, and the talent.

Only 1?

So I'm not much for shredders but when I want to listen to tasteful, Spanish inflected shredding I listen to Al DiMeola.

On the other hand I love guitar players who wring lots of emotion out of a few notes. Robin Trower's "The Turning" is a prime example:

And also in that category - and he plays kick ass slide guitar, Derek Trucks, with the Tedeschi Trucks Band
(hat tip to Otiel Burbridge who is one of the finest bassists going) :

Double your pleasure Neal Schon and Carlos Santana

Danny Gatton

Eric Johnson

Jimmy Thackery

Jeff plays and performs like no one is watching...because he doesnt much know what that even means or feels like. Lucky bastadge.

Underestimated guitar work, consummate performer. There was concern that his Royal Badness wouldnt perform in the rainstorm. His response...give me more.

This isnt his best live video performance of Purple Rain..but for what it was...it was pretty awesome. He carried the whole halftime show in a downpour.

Mark Knopfler

Joe Satriani

Eric Clapton

Did someone mention Derek Trucks?

and this one from a local guy I used to see when he played in Cincinnati a lot

Joe Walsh doing In the City and Funk 49 --

Oh my, there are so freaking MANY great guitar players.

This guy...Jeff Beck...is one of my top favorites.

Mark Knopfler
Cant explain it but The Sultans of Swing has always been one of my favorite songs. Maybe its just that it takes me back to a certain time.

IMO...Freddie King was the better blues King. Gone to soon.

SRV...another one gone too soon.

I guess it all boils down to personal taste. I like the sound of a guitar played (picked?) much like a banjo and the sound of a well played pedal steel guitar as well.

It was even better in person, trust me.
