Just watched the first episode of Sakura Quest(series just started this week), and my sides ache from laughing so much. Really worth checking out. Basic plot: girl finishing college is desperate for a job and not finding one. Gets an offer to go play a queen in a rural towns event. Does not read the contract where it specifies she will be doing events for a year. Hilarity ensues.

I havent been following anime a lot so can anyone recommend me a starter list? I like lots of action and techy stuff, but with good characters who arent too preachy either.

The few ones I saw and like are: Vampire Hunter D and Bloodlust, Robotech- the first season and against the Invid.

I have seen: Samurai X, Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Yaiba, one episode of Evangelion, a few Naruto episodes, a few episodes of Gundam too. I spent a year in Japan as a kid and did watch these huge robots like Mazinger Z (Tranzor Z in the US) and all that.

Just action is fine or do you prefer like space and stuff?

If you like Space Opera, Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a must.

At the moment you will probably still have to find an unlicensed streaming site to view it, sadly; if it were available on bluray or DVD I would buy it in a second... but it has never been sold with English dub or English subtitles, only subtitled by fans.

The only other alternative would be to import a Japan-region disc player and learn Japanese. :doh

Crunchyroll - ALDNOAH.ZERO Full episodes streaming online for free <~giant fighting robots. Pretty cool, first season much better than second, but both good.

Crunchyroll - Crunchyroll - The Official Source for Anime & Drama <~on my list to watch when I at some point get more time. Very dark giant fighting robot story.

Crunchyroll - Terror in Resonance Full episodes streaming online for free <~really good

Crunchyroll - PSYCHO-PASS Full episodes streaming online for free <~due to technological advances, the government can tell when people are going to commit crimes, and the police try and arrest people beforehand. Dark, violent, really good.

Crunchyroll - The Heroic Legend of Arslan Full episodes streaming online for free <~fantasy, young prince's first battle goes poorly and he ends up on the run for his life. Good action, good story.

Yeah Im into sci-fi like robots, space opera and stuff.

I'm not nearly as into the space setting but Knights of Sidonia was pretty good. You can find it on Netflix.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. Looks like I have enough stuff to last till next year, at least.

I just looked at the wiki- 60 episodes? Jesus. I dont think I'll have the time to watch all that.

60 episodes? No no no.

It's a film and then ONE HUNDRED AND TEN EPISODES. And it's so worth.

I understand that you're balking at that but... this isn't Inuyasha or Naruto or some ****. There isn't filler. It's got a huge cast of characters and it's one of the few space operas where there are heroes and villains on both sides of the central military conflict.

Please do not mention Naruto and Inuyasha in the same sentence...

Like Gundam?

So its serialized and every episode is good you say? I'm asking because this would be a tremendous time sink for me, but if its worth it I might just do so. I could mine a lot of good ideas for my books if its a good show.

Just a note: don't use wiki for anime series(well, as a first source anyway), use TV Tropes, which will give you more information, hide spoilers, and frequently point you to related shows. Legend of Galactic Heroes (Anime) - TV Tropes

An enormous, sprawling 110-episode (plus side stories) Space Opera originally released to home video (making this the longest-running OVA of all time, although it was later shown on TV). This is in Japan, of course, as neither the anime, nor the manga, nor the huge series of novels written by Yoshiki Tanaka which spawned the franchise have ever been released in America...until Anime Expo 2015, when Viz Media licensed the first few novels and Sentai Filmworks licensed the OVA. (A noble yet feeble attempt at licensing a dub version of the anime was made many years ago, but no one bit, and thus the only way the series is accessible in English nowadays is through Fan Subs.)

The story is played very straight and seriously and is crammed with detail. (It's also crammed with characters, from the big players at the top of the government to the lowly farmers and grunt soldiers at the bottom who get everything done. There's so many, in fact, that each episode always shows a character's name when he first shows up on screen in case you forgot who he was.) At times, this can become confusing—to the point where one really needs a scorecard of some sort to keep all of the character's names and ambitions straight. Also, the pace of the story can be very slow. It's possible to watch an episode where the heroes prepare for an invasion, skip ahead three episodes, and find the heroes still preparing for that same invasion.

A new anime adaptation is in production by Production I.G., planned for a 2017 release. Details are sparse, but it is known that it will be a new adaptation, not a remake of the OVA series.

Personally, I would wait for the new series before even considering watching the old. That will help you decide whether the old series might be worth the time. There are enough newer, better looking, higher production value shows out there that won't take nearly so long to get through. I suggest maybe Aldnoah:Zero or Valrave The Liberator. Aldnoah:Zero features politics, a princess, death, destruction, really good looking mecha, Mars vs Earth, and one of the best cliffhangers in anime at the end of the first season. Not much of the way of videos from the show on youtube, but here is the season 1 opener, which gives a decent feel for the show:

Valrave the Liberator is far, far in the future, people living on Dyson spheres, war, mecha, and lots of action. Again, not much for videos on youtube, but here is a trailer:

OK, good point on waiting till the new series comes out. I'm going to start with Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, then Im gonna watch Evangelion since I never really watched the whole series. Then I'll start with these you mentioned.

Obviously I like Eva a lot as already mentioned.

I specifically omitted Aldnoah Zero; I like the animation and music a lot but the story was so fail and disappointing from season 1 finale onwards. OTOH, it's high-def, it's robots fighting, it has a decent dub, it's on Netflix, so easy access and that's why I watched in the first place.

And it does smartly subvert (at least initially) many typical anime tropes; the protagonist's mecha is weak as hell and he has no special powers or secrets just being observant and thoughtful and figuring out the weaknesses of the ridiculous OP enemy mechs.

brace yourself for the end of the eva tv series its going to go all psycho babel and metaphysical on you

the move end of evangleion makes more sense ( low bar) but thers going to be a lot of tang every one will become tang and thats not the worst of it

the relatively recent rebuild of Evangelion movies are either a reboot or a sequal not sure which 3 films out so far still waiting on the final one

good show but the charterers will have crippling issues and things are going to get wierd

FMA:B is good stuff. Evangelion....well, FMA:B is good stuff.

One I forgot to mention is Heavy Object. It is like giant fighting robots, but instead of robots are "objects", huge tank-like behemoths that can only be damaged by other objects. Interesting designs, lots and lots and lots and lots of technobabble. Lots of fun.

I just watched the first few episodes of Evangelion and its exactly like the old super robot shows I remember as a little kid lol. All the tropes are present so far.

I actually prefer shows that subvert the usual tropes and I hope the ones you guys recommended work out. I shall be queuing them up next.

o god be careful what you wish for with evangelion it was THE subversion of super robot shows

the characters personal issues and the agenda of the folks behind the quote unquote robots will tear the characters and their world apart figuratively and literally

tang o god the tang

ok the tang is in the movie version of the end of the story

the tv ending is..um more abstract
