Favorite Animes

Netflix and Hulu, and sometimes a web search for a free one (with adds and screen locked size) if its an oddball/old.
I had crunchyroll for a while bit it didn't have as much as I thought. Given red's recommendation I may check it back out.

Absolute Favorites:
Neon Genesis Evangelion (original, End of, Rebuild 1.11 & 2.22, haven't seen 3.33 yet)
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (original is kinda meh)
Cowboy Bebop
Super Dimension Fortress Macross
Record of Lodoss War
Akira (production values amazing, still abridges story too much, manga is better)

Saw recentish and I really liked:
Your Lie in April (Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso)
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash
Psycho-Pass
Fate: Zero
Fate Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works
One Punch Man

Berserk is mainly recommended in manga form, though the recent Golden Age films were alright.

I'm still in the middle of this one, but it is AMAZING so far: Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Space opera, dramatic, great characterization, so many episodes and so many characters and depth.

PS NEXT FRIDAY, Your Name (Kimi no Na wa) is getting a US theatrical release. It's good.

Never would have pictured you for a Madoka Magica fan...

Crunchyroll now carried about 75 % of the current season, and a back catalog of literally, well, I am not going to count, but sorting alphabetically and just counting the titles that start with the letter "A" gets me 51 titles, so probably a good 1000 series giver or take.

Does Speed Racer count? :)

Not sure I could rank them, but ones I personally enjoy are: Fate series, Your Lie In April, Madoka, Erased, and I cannot actually decide on a fifth as of now.

As I wolfed down dinner, I thought of a few more:

Erased - 2/3 great, 1/3 terrible. The 2/3 that is great though is really great.

One Punch Man - an over the top comedy based on the superhero genre, about a hero who can beat any enemy with one punch. Features a hoodie I want:

oppai.jpg

My Hero Acadamia - not the greatest thing ever, but a really good take on the superhero genre(season 2 starting in April)

Gekkan Shojo Nozaki-Kun - a shojo anime making fun of shojo anime/manga tropes, and messing with gender roles. Hilarious.

Ouran High School Host Club - how did I forget this one? Hilarious fun.

School Live - genre bending psychological horror. The last 2 minutes of the first episode are one of the better surprise moments in anime. Really twisted...

My favorite AMV

Witch Craft Works: where else can you get a giant teddy bear in a wrestling match with a giant rabbit?

Blood Blockade Battlefront: hyper action and cool visuals make this a must watch show.

Beyond The Boundary: beautifully animated comedy/tragedy/action/supernatural story.

Amagi Brilliant Park: what if the mascots at an amusement park really where magic?

Toradora: About the best anime romance comedy, ever.

And last, but far from least, one of my absolute favorites, Pet Girl of Sakurasou, a romance comedy featuring a female lead with autism(though the story never actually explains why she is as she is, it is very clear she is autistic, almost textbook).

So, weirdly, I never watch anime when I was younger and only picked up watching them about a year ago. I feel kinda dumb for picking up anime as an adult but w/e, I like them, to include some of their absurdity. So I'm going to put some of the ones I liked and I'm looking for ones others enjoy for reference also a little of where you can find them.

Comedy:
Devil is a Part-Timer (Netflix)
One-punch man (Netflix)

Action:
Attack on Titan (Netflix)
Fairy Tail (kissanime.com)
Hunter X Hunter (Netflix)
Full Metal Alchemist (kissanime.com)
Seven Deadly Sins (Netflix)
Sword Art Online (Netflix)
Bleach (Netflix)
Rurouni Kenshin (Netflix)

Some that I liked. Obviously I don't do the drama type ones. Mostly action with also some comedy/action. The Devil is a Part-Timer is pretty funny, the entire premise is ridiculous, and I like it. I think kissanime has pretty much everyone ever made.

If anyone has any sites/sources they prefer to watch on that would be cool too.

Full Metal Alchemist - Both versions
Ghost in the Shell
Seven Deadly Sins
Attack on Titan
Space Battleship Yamato - Starblazers in the US.

Soul Eater... Humorous.

Oh, misread that

Never would have pictured you for a Madoka Magica fan...

a) It's a dark deconstruction anime

b) YOU RECOMMENDED IT TO ME.

c) I told you how much I liked it! :doh

I totally forgot about doing that. Have you checked out Re: Zero yet? It is likewise a dark deconstruction. Also, watch School Live if you have not. Both are on Crunchyroll.

Here's a short video that explains it better than I could:

Anime fills a huge void in American programming. Seeing netflix back anime projects and that its got its own genre, etc., it's simply become more and more mainstream over time.
I watched them from the beginning, dropped out for a while, then picked it back up.

I was gonna say that the Netflix model (to include Amazon, ect) may have a hand in changing that dynamic. I think funding may be easier now than ever, especially with Netflix doing it's own original programming so it can get the rights to things.

I like Re: Zero but I was disappointed they didn't end on the cliffhanger that should have happened by the source material.

Do you mean UBW? If you haven't watched Fate Zero too. Super good.

I mean where do you stream from? Like, I use Netflix and kissanime.com

One Punch Man - an over the top comedy based on the superhero genre, about a hero who can beat any enemy with one punch. Features a hoodie I want:

I just stumbled upon One Punch Man last week new on Netflix. I was thinking it was gonna be lame but it had me rolling. Very well done. Can kill any enemy with one punch. Can't kill mosquito, lol.

I'll list my top 5 favorite:

1. Code Geass
2. Ouran High School Host Club (the first anime I ever watched)
3. Durarara!!
4. K-On
5. Attack on Titan

I just started Durarara!! before seeing this, had to stop to go do stuff so I didn't make it through the first episode yet. It seemed a little weird so I'm glad you said something so I'll be more inclined to keep going on it.

So a more serious question. My 11 yo daughter is getting into anime and it's a genre than can have some issues. She was watching one and my wife heard something derogatory towards women and got a little triggered and now thinks it's all super misogynist.

Well, it's weird because anime in some ways actually is fairly misogynist (full of skinny girls with giant boobs bouncing around, ect) but at the same time it's the exact opposite and girl characters are created with a lot of equality. Tons of super powerful girls that are heroes and kicking dude's butts and all that.

I dunno how to explain this to the boss lady to make her not dislike it so much.

First, anime is not so much misogynistic I don't think, as it is male-centric. Mostly it is aimed at guys, so the female characters are first and foremost eye candy. Male characters tend to be more fleshed out as characters, while female characters tend to be there as romantic interests and maybe the heroine who needs to be saved. Thankfully, there are some exceptions...

Sit down with your daughter and wife(if she will) and watch Snow White With The Red Hair(Akagami no Shirayuki-hime). Zero objectionable content. Strong female lead. Great story and characters. It is shojo, and the female lead is the lead character, and she is simply great. Shirayuki(shiro = white, Yuki = snow) is not a combat type, but she is strong willed, determined to succeed, and just a great female role model type character. I cannot say enough good about this show, and I can't believe I did not mention it before this as it really is a favorite.

Another shojo I recommend highly is MY Love Story!!(Ore Monogatari!!). Much more emphasis on humor, great romance that ditches the will they or won't they right away, and moves into a couple teens learning how to be in a relationship, dealing with different expectations, transitioning from the initial attraction, to actual love. Very shojoish, but hilariously funny. The male lead is a first year high school boy who is 6'6", 300 lbs of pure muscle, loud, and an odd looking face. The female lead is 5' tops and thin.

And of course, there is always K On. 4 girls form a band, sit around and do not much, but it is still pretty funny. Non Non Biyori maybe. No objectionable content, just a bunch of girls, aged 6 to 14, hanging out and going to school in the country. Hilarious at times.

Flying Witch might be another good one. 16 year old girl who is a witch goes to stay with relatives out in the boonies. The focus is on the female characters, they are interesting and independent, nothing at all objectionable about it(except for one brief comment about the pain associated with riding a broom). Good show.
