MTV killed music

I loved the 80's and the music. Fashion and style were revived and after the sucking 70's, music was all shiny and new again too.

The only thing '70s fashion and '80s fashion had in common is that they looked like everyone who made them was on copious amounts of cocaine, which they probably were.

It's in the discussion. "Disintegration" by The Cure was amazing. "It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back" (Public Enemy), "Thriller" (MJ), "Synchronicity" (The Police), "Paul's Boutique" (The Beastie Boys), "Pretty Hate Machine" (NIN), "Green" (REM) are pretty high on my list of top '80s albums.

Only one I disagree with is "Pretty Hate Machine" as it was released Oct 1989.. I see it as more as a 90's album. Also found NIN's "The Fragile".. their best album.

"Broken" was an EP but IMHO it's the best thing Trent has put out.

And...I loved my MTV until they killed the music on their channel with horrible reality TV. They should have just started a new channel and left MTV, music TV.

Hey, don't be hatin' on Catfish.

'80s music had some great moments.

'80s fashion was godawful.

+1.

Fortunately, I was only about 8 by the time the 80s ended, so I was too young to have any embarrassing photos of me from the 80s.

Here's to horrible songs that never would have existed if not for MTV

The epitome of mindless MTV crap

Redeemable ONLY because of that chicks eyes

Awful. Just freaking horrible. Kind of like deep fried sugar coated sugar

I like le all of those songs and only recall ever seeing the Bangles video. Not all songs have to be musical masterpieces. :)

MTV did not kill music

music is not static; it is in a constant state of change, which keeps music interesting, fresh, and valid as an art form

MTV did not kill music.

It came out while I was stationed at Ft. Hood Texas. I discovered it on my cable TV options.

I used to enjoy coming home after a hard day at work and flipping it on to listen to current music while I read or did other chores and waited for "Prime Time" TV to start.

As it developed and began the Video DJ format it opened up my mind to a more eclectic taste in music.

It exposed me to Hard Rock, Goth, Industrial, Underground (Rave), and other forms of music.

I "loved My MTV" when it included All Things Rock, Headbangers Ball, 120 Minutes, Alternative Nation, So 90's, MTV Soul, and Amp. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_programs_broadcast_by_MTV#Music_series_2

I hated it when it switched to this new format and stopped being "Music TV" to turn into it's current "Muck, Trash, and Vomit" television. Kind of like when the Sci-Fi Channel became "SyFy."

I miss the old MTV.

I'm not sure that the amount of bad music from the 80s can be blamed on MTV specifically. Besides, without all that horrible music, perhaps we wouldn't have seen bands link Guns n' Roses, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Tool, etc., explode out of the morass.

All MTV and VH1 did was provide a forum where bad music could perhaps be papered over by flashy videos and dance routines. But if you already don't like pop pop/rock, you're not going to like a video of people dancing to it either.
