Sort of an intergalactic lawman when I was growing up

I can't believe I didn't post it earlier:doh

Hawaii 5-0

Both the old Jack Lord version and the new Alex O'Loughlin versions are excellent.

Mister Dillon! Mister Dillon!

They're just looking out for you.

So many to pick from!!!!!!

Barney Miller is right up there. That whole cast was great.

He wasn't exactly law enforcement but Lucas McCain did his fair share of public service.

Andy Griffith may well have been the best cop ever.

Columbo was a genius.

The CSI crew in Vegas did a fine job of dealing with really, really weird cases.
Barney Miller was just ... unique.

It's one of those shows that self-defined it's own unique niche'.

Similar to Night Court.

But while Night Court had interesting and funny scenarios with it's parade of guest characters, Barney Miller had really excellent character development in it's regular characters (along with a pretty good guest parade of it's own!).

I happen to like Vic Mackey.

It's not easy to portray a functional Machiavellian narcissistic unlawful cop, realistically.

You listed the exact ones I would have picked!

I don't know if The Avengers series from the entire decade of the 1960s, starring Patrick Macnee as John Steed and Diana Rigg as Emma Peel qualify for this thread - they were more government secret agents than policemen - but my Mother-in-Law gave us one year of their TV series as a Christmas gift some years ago, and I enjoyed watching them so much that I later bought the entire series! I still watch them from time to time!

I remember they did a different age of consent skit where Raineesha was telling people to check their dates government issued photo ID "or you're going to the big bed, in county issued shiny bling bling" while holding handcuffs suggestively.

Det Logan from Law and order, as played by Chris Noth

Karl Malden and Michael Douglas

My favorite character on a cop show wasn't a cop.

If not

has always been my fav...

No. They went from kind of entertaining to just plain annoying and when they did the Miami thing it was just horrible.

Lol. I think that was the point.

I know this is one that many may not have seen, but it was pretty good for the level of training they gave their people:

And then there is:

Another funny one.
