Eli Wallach and Ray Stevenson.

Female: Streep, slam dunk there.

Male: Hopkins, but I'd waffle there a bit when Pacino or Hanks are really on their game in a film.

Ali McGraw certainly brings back memories. Which reminds me: Steve McQueen. My absolute favorite actor ever when I dust off those who are dead.

Bullit
Great Escape
Cincinnati Kid

Three wonderful films I have not seen in ages.

Bronson runs a close second here, I should add. I just rewatched a bunch of his stuff during Christmas vacation.
Mr Majestic
Death Wish series
Love and Bullets
Twinky
Breakout
Family of Cops
Magnificent 7
Plus, he was in the Gr Escape too.

Susan George. Man, I had the biggest crush on her when I was in the 7th grade. :)

Depp deserves consideration. His Jack Sparrow persona still gets me......funny stuff.

But all the picks from prior posts are great.

some of Bronson's death wish movies were so bombastically over the top, that it sort of detracted from the first couple. My favorite movie he did was the best of the 3-4 films depicting the Israeli mission to free the Entebbe Hostages

Marlon Brando and Toshiro Mifune.

Toshiro Mifune is a great pick. another great foreign actor who was tremendous was Klaus Kinki-who was paranoid bipolar and played such people so well (such as Aguirre, the Wrath of God)

love James Mason in "5 fingers"

Claude Raines not only with his words but with his eyes and gestures, shows the man was such a great actor.

Who is on your list?

Too many to list though I approve of your list for the most part. But I judge great acting on a person's ability to make me believe they ARE the person in the role they are playing instead of me watching Jimmy Stewart or Tom Hanks play a role. Richard Harris, Richard Burton, Jessica Tandy, Maggie Smith, Rex Harrison among many others were that caliber of actor.

It is a quality I can't really explain or define, but it's real for me.

Over the top in a good way, IMO. What I mean is the movies changed our perspective. They took the sense of feeling powerless over street crime, a feeling which was rather common back in those days, and showed us through the Bronson character's over the top vengeance that we do not have to take it anymore. CCW rates have soared ever since. :)

Those movies almost single handily took us from being a believe in the super cops society to one which started accepting that you need to take some personal control over the matter.

Josh Brolin

Benicio del Toro

Andy Garcia

Helen Mirren

John Malkovich
