One of the best shows, ever... and a very good, low key actor that often helped keep the zaniness sane. RIP.

R.i.p.

What is it about this holiday season...celebrities are dropping like flies?

He may be gone, but he had the privilege of being part of very talented cast in a seminal & groundbreaking sitcom, turned comedic-drama, under Alan Alda's eventual direction.

He was not a regular when he signed on, the part was never supposed to be, but that is where it ended up. I cant remember the story, I used to know it, something about what a great guy he was to work with and what wonderful work he did.

Another one bites the dust.

RIP William Christopher

R.I.P. William Christopher. No one could have played the part of Father Mulcahy better than you did. You were perfect for the part, and you will not be forgotten. Condolences to family and friends.

That sucks.

Actually, i thought he had already died some years ago. Guess i was wrong.

When my sister texted me the news last night, I thought she was referring to Rene Auberjonois, who originated the role in the film.

I didn't know that. about Rene. It's been so long since I've seen the movie.

Rest in peace.

It's been a long time for me too, but this is the one movie I've seen nearly two dozen times. You really do have to to catch some of the dialogue, and I finally bought the book on which the movie was based. And then when I watched the movie again, I could hear what I'd missed so many times because I was watching for it. Example: How Trapper John got his name.

I loved Alan Alda and Wayne Rogers, but the TV show was just so "cutesie" in contrast to the film that I didn't watch it much.

...which completely ruined the show, IMO. I watched, maybe, three episodes the last 3 or 4 seasons. It wasn't funny anymore, and I was no longer interested.

I never watched the final episode until a month ago, and... I quit about half way through. Snoozeville.

Well, that's an example of 'to each, their own'.

By then though, I was thoroughly hooked on 'Hill Street Blues'!

I never saw "Hill Street Blues" or "LA Law" either (correct title?). Or the original "Law and Order," but I'm catching up now. I've never been much of a TV watcher anyway and had little kids, but the reruns from the early '90's are so much better than most current TV fare, and besides, it's neat to see so many now-seasoned actors when they were just starting out.

Hill Street Blues was pretty cutting edged for it's time, including the Law & Order fast panned camera movement.

Dennis Franz (Sipowitz in L & O) played a fantastic dirty cop. He really is an amazing actor, perfect for cop shows.

Hill Street Blues just had some interesting characters; I liked it a lot.

Ah, Dennis Franz. "NYPD Blue" with a young David Caruso (later of "CSI: Miami") and Nicholas Turturro (later of "Blue Bloods," and Bill Brochtrup, the openly gay actor playing the openly gay assistant (later playing a psychiatrist on "Major Crimes"). He's wonderful. I loved that show--remember Franz's bare-butt scene?
