Another major loss:
Guy passed in May 2016 at 74, but it seems like I saw him last week performing at his 70th birthday show.
Many years back, in 1975 Peaches Records, once the world's largest record stores and chains, located in Boulder Colorado, sponsored a free afternoon outdoor show celebrating its opening in Boulder (actually a three day event), with Leon Russell and Guy Clark on the first day bill. After the show, Leon and Guy, accompanied by Joe Ely, Townes Van Zandt, Kris Kristofferson, Jeffry Jeff Walker, and a whole bunch of others, retired to a local bar tossing back whiskies and songs til 5am the next morning. Eric Clapton, who was scheduled for the next day, sat and listened. Come morning, as we all dragged ourselves back to our motels, Eric said "Guy is my guitar secret." I was visiting with a bud from the service, who's family came from Boulder. We hadn't known about the show, we had never heard of Guy, and we kind of stumbled on the scene as my friend was showing me the town. We went along with everyone to the bar, listened and got clobbered. I've been listening to Guy ever since. I arrived home here in NYC 3 days later and still hungover. When I entered our home, my wife said "You stink like stale beer and bad cheese, shower and burn those clothes." I put Guy on the turntable, took that shower and when I came out of it my wife said, "OK, for bringing that home, you're forgiven."
Sadly, music videos weren't a thing yet, and no one filmed the show, or taped it and the bar scene, that I know of or have heard about. Gave me a whole bunch of new goals as an amateur guitarist and a whole bunch of new songs to learn. Those Texas Troubadours and balladeers were something else. The poetry never stopped coming from all of them.
