This is in random order, first up, David Bowie who died January 10th. My song choice might be a bit controversial but it technically is him singing but with his band Tin Machine performing live in the capital of my home country the Netherlands, Under the God:

Glenn Frey, solo artist and of course member of the awesome Eagles died January 18th, one of his most memorable solo songs is from one of my favorite movies, Beverly Hills cop 1

The heat is on:

Rick Parfitt, December 24th, member of a great rock band, Status Quo:

Greg Lake from Emerson Lake and Palmer died December 7th

Leonard Cohen who died November 7th

Nick Menza drummer of a good Trash band Megadeath died this year on May 21st, he was drummer when one of their best songs was released:

Symphony of Destruction:

They were however also the band with the worst live show I ever saw when they headlined a festival in Zwolle (a long time ago when I was young LOL) and they played just over 1 hour and then packed up and left, worst headliner I ever saw.

On April 21st Prince (TAFKAP) died way too early, I may have not been a fan of his later work but there were three albums in the early days that were some of my favority, 1999, Purple Rain and my favorite of the three Around the world in a Day.

Of that last album one of my favorite songs of Prince, condition of the heart

And for good measure a song from Purple Rain, darling Nikki

Vanity (from Vanity 6) died February 15th

Another one gone in '16, socal rapper Big Syke who recorded with 2Pac at one time.

one of the towering giants of the San Francisco rock scene went home to join Jerry Garcia, Pig Pen, and his other friends: Paul Kantner who died earlier this year

The first is Paul's wonderful harmonies with Grace Slick-Jefferson Airplane,
the second is his record after the Airplane broke up featuring Jerry Garcia on Pedal Steel Guitar along with David Crosby and others

53 is much too young to did.RIP.:(

November 13, 2017:

The Circle Cinema in Tulsa hosted a fundraiser to build a suitable memorial to Leon Russell,
They featured my film, "Out of the Deep Freeze - The Lost Reels". (The Best of the Leon Russell Festivals)
Not only did it sell out, they opened two more screens and they sold out, too.

I'll be taking my little film on the road around the country this spring, and will continue donating a generous portion of the gate to
Russell's estate and to the Memorial Foundation.

Another major loss:

Guy passed in May 2016 at 74, but it seems like I saw him last week performing at his 70th birthday show.

Many years back, in 1975 Peaches Records, once the world's largest record stores and chains, located in Boulder Colorado, sponsored a free afternoon outdoor show celebrating its opening in Boulder (actually a three day event), with Leon Russell and Guy Clark on the first day bill. After the show, Leon and Guy, accompanied by Joe Ely, Townes Van Zandt, Kris Kristofferson, Jeffry Jeff Walker, and a whole bunch of others, retired to a local bar tossing back whiskies and songs til 5am the next morning. Eric Clapton, who was scheduled for the next day, sat and listened. Come morning, as we all dragged ourselves back to our motels, Eric said "Guy is my guitar secret." I was visiting with a bud from the service, who's family came from Boulder. We hadn't known about the show, we had never heard of Guy, and we kind of stumbled on the scene as my friend was showing me the town. We went along with everyone to the bar, listened and got clobbered. I've been listening to Guy ever since. I arrived home here in NYC 3 days later and still hungover. When I entered our home, my wife said "You stink like stale beer and bad cheese, shower and burn those clothes." I put Guy on the turntable, took that shower and when I came out of it my wife said, "OK, for bringing that home, you're forgiven."

Sadly, music videos weren't a thing yet, and no one filmed the show, or taped it and the bar scene, that I know of or have heard about. Gave me a whole bunch of new goals as an amateur guitarist and a whole bunch of new songs to learn. Those Texas Troubadours and balladeers were something else. The poetry never stopped coming from all of them.

One of my favorite songs by Guy:

Top Bottom
