Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

I liked the Vader scene?

The characters did nothing for me and made me appreciate TFA a whole lot more. The first two thirds of the movie are really disjointed and boring.

Whatever Forrest Whitaker was trying to do failed.

Vaders costume looked awful in his first scene.

CGI charscters were really distracting. Somebody fell too much in love with that tech.

Jyns backstory seemed copy pasted from Rey with none of the charm in the performance.

I dunno, quite forgettable for me.

Chris Stuckmann & Doug Walker joint review:

Wow. If only those guys could be a 1/4 as funny as they think they are.

I absolutely loved this movie! I wish there were more Star Wars movies like Rogue One. What made it even better is we saw it at a Drive-In (on December 23rd). Welcome to the Historic Swan Drive-In

"...the Force is with me and I am one with the Force..."

Thing is you weren't supposed to love the characters, they were always expendable. They represented part of the story we always saw but never thought about.

Just saw it with my youngest son. Far better than Force unleashed and ( SPOILER ALERT !!! )

Everyone dies.

Ummm....Lol, except for the two guys Luke and Obi One run into in the Cantina on Tattooine in Stars Wars 4

For those who've already seen Rogue one, remember when Jenna Ersa and Captain Casian Andorra where walking through the streets of Jedha ?

Well guess who they bumped into ? Yup, the two tough guys from the Cantina scene in Stars Wars 4. And the one still had both arms. ( Obie relieves him of one in the Cantina scene )

And wasn't Jedha anilhilated by the Death Star ? Yup....Our heroes barely escaped themselves. So is it a continuity issue or a little inside joke ?

I think it's hilarious they somehow managed to survive Jedha just so they could make their way to Tattooine where they could harass Luke

Finally got to see it. I thought it was brilliant.

I like the CGI effects with Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher.

After all these years and knowing the ultimate fate of Darth Vader and his whole backstory, I was pleasantly surprised they could still make his presence so ominous and make him seem like an unstoppable force of death and terror.

I thought it was great.

Good female leaad

Agreed. I actually like Jyn more than Rey (at least for now).

Tied up the loose end of the strange vulnerability in the death star.

I was kinda wondering why Cassian didn't shoot Krennic after choosing not to shoot Galen Erso?

Idk. I guess he wanted to leave him to die.

But all I know is Orson Krennic had the worst day ever. Being killed by your own achievement must suck. :2razz:

Also, why did Organa mention sending people to find someone (presumably Obi Wan) if Leia (who seems to know vaguely where to find Obi Wan) ends up on the rebel command ship at the attack?

The person that Bail mentioned to find Obi-Wan was Leia. That's why they were headed to Tatooine at the start of Episode IV.

Hmm... i think i like Jyn more too...

Ah, he earned it!

Yeah but why was Leia on the attacking flagship instead of being on her way to Tatooine?

This is sort of a side note, but I'm so glad she and Cassian didn't kiss. I could've sworn they were going to, but thankfully that didn't happen.

Ah, he earned it!

He.defintely did, but I still kinda felt a little bad for him, with Tarkin stealing all his glory and all. His death was also very poetic.

Yeah but why was Leia on the attacking flagship instead of being on her way to Tatooine?

Because she was supposed to deliver the plans to Obi-Wan. I think it was too risky to deliver the plans back to Yavin 4.

Apparently she was supposed to go on her mission after they were away from the battle over Scarif, but since Darth Vader showed up out of nowhere and boarded the flagship, they had no choice but to launch the Tantive IV and escape to Tatooine with the plans.

After some time to think about it, there are some problems with the film, namely the characters who are all, flat, not particularly memorable or likeable except for the Droid.

I dunno, I'm going to see it again on Sunday so we'll see if my opinion changes.

But it's tough, is it simply that the love for Leia, Luke, Han, Chewie and the rest of the gang, is simply too great for any ensemble to overcome?

It caused a continuity error with Ep IV.

Better: Vader does his lightsaber badass **** and recovers the data disk - but then he receives word that another nearby ship, headed to Tatooine, intercepted the transmission from Skarif. He takes off in pursuit.

Same ending, no continuity issues.

Saw it Christmas Day because I brought home a lovely cold from work, and everyone else caught it one by one. By the 25th we finally were all not stuffy and headache'd so we went.

It's Star Wars so I'm not sure what I think yet. It's difficult to be objective and critical, because OMG STAR WARS.

My initial impression is that this was very very weird if still somewhat plausible but I'm annoyed at how they've not only retconned everything past Jedi they're changing things before Hope and I guess they spent $4B they're gonna do what they want...

I find myself profoundly disinterested in relearning the new expanded universe or memorizing fine details of the new movies given the retconning. So on that hand, negative subjectivity.

And on the other hand, as RLM put it during Half in the Bag, so much Star Wars fan service that it was essentially porn. So on that hand, positive subjectivity.

Difficult to be objective.

Some things worked, others didn't. It was kinda good but the script / new characters were lacking to me; feels like they had a bunch of pointless moments and bizarre decisions in the service of a stilted narrative.

On the other hand, Darth Vader, **** yeah.

I'm torn. I'd have to see it again, but I think one thing is telling in terms of my overall opinion: this is a Star Wars movie, albeit a side story, anthology movie, but nonetheless, I won't be going back to see it again in theater.
I think the entire point is that the cast and characters were supposed to be inspirational and completely forgettable at the same time. This movie was a one and done for most of the characters. Its a bridge...and in that it succeeded.

We had three movies to build that relationship with and a very specific story. In this movie...we have a rebel force that pretty much all must die. I thought the LACK of character develop was intentional and brilliant. We knew going in that no one made it out alive.

My favorite part was the spaceships and aliens. And of course the fighting scenes were amazing. And when Chewbacca twerked, wow, didn't see that one coming.

:2razz: I didn't see it.

Yep, I read that even Lucas gave his personal stamp of approval and if there was any reservations about Disney ruining the brand I think its safe to say they've done a fantastic job with Rogue One

Oh, and I thought Force awakens was a patronizing gutless mess

Oh look, now the Death Star is actually a small moon, lets blow it up....wash rinse repeat...

Abrams.

Abrams sucks.

He tries to take iconic, much-loved material and make it his own, and he always falls short.

He tried his homage to Steven Spielberg with "Super 8." It sucked. He may have had the camera angles, but he didn't have anything like the soul. "Stranger Things" came along and showed him how to do that.

He tried his "Star Wars." He literally copied Ep IV. But it sucked. It had the ingredients; it didn't have anything like the soul. "Rogue One" came along and showed him how to do that.

He tried his "Star Trek." It utterly and completely sucked donkey balls, and showed he didn't actually know a thing about "Star Trek." Hell, amateur fans show him how to do that.

Abrams. Abrams sucks.
