Every once in a while I check out the billboard top 100 just to see what the new music is.

well one artist has their entire album on the top 100, either this is the best album of all time or people are just not really making good music anymore.

Its not that great of an album, in fact this is the 2nd time this year where a full album of 18 tracks have been on the top 100 and the 3rd time in 365 days.

These 3 are the only 3 to break the Beatles record that was set in 1964 which arguably was one of the best records of all time.

If you're looking at the top 100, you're gonna have problems finding anything decent.

Quality songs on pop charts have always been few and far between. Look how many times Led Zeppelin or Jimi Hendrix made the charts.

If you have a local college/University that has a radio station dial in. Some of the most interesting music was played by the college here.

The lack of ability to make money at it is a real problem. I would expect to find less interest in the youth to learn music as a result, which will mean that the quality will decline. I am not clued into the current situation but it is rare to find interesting stuff, I suspect that there is a problem right now.

Tool is supposedly working on a new album, and I suppose Guns n' Roses is doing a reunion tour, so not quite dead.

(And there are a few others out there. Black Keys, Joe Bonamassa, Satriani, etc).

I think you're just aging. As it turns out, so am I, WTH!

There is some good music out there, in fact, I think what I consider good music has become more and more mainstream. Which the hipster in me is conflicted about, and may want to redefine what music I like because of it (kidding, I think).

But it feels like we have music overload, and movie/tv overload, and game overload. Sooooo much content at our fingertips, we just don't care about anyone one thing that much any longer. I have no data to back it, just a guess.

No, music is not dead. Those who actually love/cherish/appreciate/play/seek out music do not waste their time any chart rankings.

The vast, VAST majority of new music will never chart. Why limit yourself?

Tool: one of the greatest bands in history.
GNR: hot, bubbling excrement from the first note they ever played.

There's plenty of great music out there. Much like news and entertainment, the mainstream of music seems to be some of the worst. Lately, I've been really enjoying a subgenre called electric swing. The upbeat subset of jazz seems to lend itself to electric pretty well. Here, give this a try, you might like it. Or hate it. One of my favorite things about the information age is that there's room for everyone online, and a niche for every weird taste.

Popular culture music is dying. We are decentralizing our musical culture with the effect that there's far less of us who have or will have children who will grow up with shared musical identities. In most ways it's a good thing; in some ways bad.
