What Ever Happened to GOOD Sitcoms?

All in the family did A LOT of preaching. Every week it was another social issue. I like to watch Sitcoms to be entertained. And laugh. Watching Archie and Meat Head scream at each other for 30 mins. about the Vietnam war was not entertaining, or funny. I have no problems with shows that tackle social and world issues. But, IMO, that shouldn't happen on Sitcoms.

Happy Days was good when it 1st started. But after a few years it got to be the 'Fonzie' show, and got really stupid.

You are the only person besides me that felt that way about All In the Family. Like the Bill Cosby show, it was good for one episode, after that it was SOS squared, same **** only softer.

I think after the 7-8 year mark all Sitcoms start to get stale. They run out of things to write about for the characters.

1 that didn't is 1 I left off my list. Frasier. That should be on my list, it's was 1 of the best Sitcoms of all time.

I'd say most get stale after 7 or 8 episodes. There is a reason one of the greatest sit coms, "The Honeymooners" only filmed 39 episodes, or what is maintained as The Classic 39"

In a communications course many, many years ago, it was put forth that outside of the setting, every sitcom is based on a model from either I Love Lucy or The Honeymooners", as all tend to deal with conflict between lovers and/or friends in varying and often absurd situations...and all get their base plot lines from Vaudeville.

Mary Tyler Moore only went 7 years I think. Taxi 5 years. Dick Van Dyke, also 5 I think.

But IDK if they called it quits 'early' because they ran out of things to write about? Or because the casts on those 3 shows were maybe the best on any Sitcom, so most of the characters wanted to move on to do other things. Taxi especially. What a crew.

I believe MTM was cancelled because of declining ratings, but it had gotten stale. I know Taxi went away because of the dynamics, Andy Kaufman HATED his role, and was being difficult. Also, the cast, DeVito and Danza were squeezing the network for major $ As far as I was concerned the series was better without Danza.
