Cover versions that are better than the original

I also really like the smashing pumpkins cover of "Landslide".
I like the song, I like their pared back instrumentation, I just really dislike the vocals. They sound lazy and incoherent to me. The best cover of this song for me is the Dixie Chicks' version.

I think that song is the most covered song in history.
No way. I think Spud's got it - Yesterday, or perhaps Imagine, Over The Rainbow, or My Way.

Alright, let's throw another Canuck tune into the mix - same era, same genre.

I wish I could say the cover is better, but they are both so good and unique I can't, but have to toss both out there.

The original is iconically priceless. But the Mathew's southern comfort version flows beautifully and has a special place in my heart.

MSC-the founder was the former lead singer for Fairport Convention: on his debut album he had lots of big names from British folk/rock such as the great Richard Thompson and Simon Nicol

Love the "Am I Evil" shoutout for Metallica. Let me also throw a vote in for Turn the Page; I actually like their version far better.

But the first two I immediately thought of dealt with the Man in Black. One coving Nine Inch Nails, one covering Depeche Mode.

Hurt, specifically, is a major favorite of mine. The lyrics, mixed with Johnny's voice, just really is on point and memorable.

The original is one of the greatest acoustic pieces ever recorded IMHO

the cover's electric version is equally awesome

Alright, while I appreciate your sentiments - when it comes to Jorma Kaukonen, and hopefully without straying too far off-topic, I feel compelled to offer this video in the category of "greatest pop acoustic pieces". Leaving Jorma aside though, I'd also consider giving the award to Greg Allman's Little Martha off the Eat a Peach double album.

Of course if we leave pop we run into such luminaries as Andres Segovia, Pat Metheney, etc, which is a whole 'nuther ball game!

[I'm posting the live version from the R & R Hall of Fame induction ceremony - but the Surrealistic Pillow studio version is IMO the gold standard recording]

I really, *really*, like Trent Reznor's studio and live variations of Hurt! But damn - there's something especially poignant about Cash's version!

speaking of the man in black

here is a good cover of one of his big hits

and here is a great cover he and Joe Strummer did of Bob Marley's wonderful Redemption Song.

The original of this song is probably my all time favorite, but Sammy and Schon rock it!!

Downtown Train, Tom Waits is the original

The cover from Rod Stewart IMO was better

speaking of Rod Stewart

the original

the best cover IMHO (yeah better than Sheryl Crow's)

Not really better, depends on my mood which one I like better at that moment in time

Original

Then there is the Live version by Santana from Moonflower which may be better than both
