I tried to watch it but I could never get past the 1st episode. It's hard to believe that a guy who has no social skills also has the ability to read people like profiler which would require extreme social skills.

First episode of the first season? Yes. I think the key to Elliot's character is that he looks at people as if they were statistics and that's how he reads them- sort of like a cop profiling a serial killer due to their tendencies and habits. He is definitely socially awkward and his character carries the show because its really all about him. If you like a show that's unpredictable and things are not what they seem, then this is the show for you.
