Mel Gibson has made a movie about a pacifist who served nobly during WWII. It's a testament to his filmmaking chops, and also an act of atonement that may succeed in bringing Gibson back.

Mel Gibson’s “Hacksaw Ridge,” which premiered today at the 73rd International Venice Film Festival, is a brutally effective, bristlingly idiosyncratic combat saga — the true story of a man of peace caught up in the inferno of World War II. It’s the first movie Gibson has directed since “Apocalypto,” 10 years ago (a film he’d already shot before the scandals that engulfed him), and this November, when it opens with a good chance of becoming a player during awards season, it will likely prove to be the first film in a decade that can mark his re-entry into the heart of the industry. Yet to say that “Hacksaw Ridge” finally leaves the Gibson scandals behind isn’t quite right; it has been made in their shadow. On some not-so-hard-to-read level, the film is conceived and presented as an act of atonement.

It is right and fitting that he can't appear in a film again.

Who says he can't appear in films again?

His most recent film is "Blood Father," currently in theaters now. I actually saw it on cable, and it is a typical action flick. It was so-so but I didn't consider it a waste of money.

I have no problem with him as either an actor or a director. I don't have to agree with a person's personal life or politics in order to enjoy their artistic endeavors.

Mel Gibson is quite talented.

He's a racist - obviously why you like him.

Isn't everyone?

I like him because he speaks the truth....You Can't Handle the Truth, so it's a no brainer why you don't like him. :2razz:

He is a moron alcoholic / feel free to worship a piece of **** like him.

It is possible to be blunt and not be a racist alcoholic.

At least be honest about being a racist - don't lie about it like Trump.

Well this thread hit bottom fast. Some of you should consider lightening up your act somewhat. Good Grief.

Why? He's a total jackwagon of a human being. But hey, he's a great actor.

If you say so. No, I do not think he is all that great, as a director I believe he is better.

Mel is pretty good at directing war movies, I'll give him that.

I have always liked the films he directed and look forward to seeing this one. It sounds well worth the time and money.

I am always wanting someone like him to make a comeback. For all the eccentricities, for all of the insulting things some of these celebrities do, I'm far less interested in that than I am in them coming out with a great movie or having a fun part in a movie.

But I will add that as pretty as this film is, I think the film has two related things going for it. 1) It has a unique pitch for a WWII film, 2) That unique pitch just so happens to be a conscientious objector.

I think that these two things not only make it more interesting for film goers, but it also butters up the Left of Hollywood.

Why? He might be s crappy person but what does that have to go with the quality of his movies?

Apocalypto was an awesome/underated movie, I believe he directed that one too

Let me guess....there's a 10 minute scene about a botched field amputation, replete with close-ups swapping between the wound and the face of the soldier, yes?

that's really a stupid claim. Gibson is a very talented actor and is well regarded as so.

there are lots of talented actors who are either complete pains in the ass to work with (Val Kilmer for example) or are turds in real life. same with some rock stars or singers.

What a stupid and uninformed post.

You obviously have missed his recent history involving alcohol.

Ted Nugent comes to mind. :lamo

yeah like when gibson begged stan and kenny to torture him at his house, then chased them all the way back to colorado in his underwear and braveheart warpaint, then took a **** in the face of a 9 year old

very difficult to work with indeed

oh and remember, hitler was a talented actor too!
