Anime: Faves and Dislikes

For what it is worth, the best shows this current season:

1: Re: Zero - newest entry in the gamer trapped in a fantasy world genre, it starts kinda mediocre, and then about 5 episodes in starts to get really good. The twist is the hero is in a kind of Groundhog Day situation, except the reset happens when he dies. And his deaths tend to be really unpleasant, with torture and dismemberment on occasion. It has humor, cuteness, a lot of mysteries and surprises, and steadily improving storytelling.

2: Flying Witch - one of two "healing anime" this season. Slow paced, frequently understated humor, but very enjoyable.

3: My Hero Acadamia - Shonen Jump comedy take on the superhero genre. Tsu-chan, whose power is she is like a frog, is especially great.

4: Assassination Classroom - season 2 continues with the absurd humor. Never great, but always good.

5: Netoge - gamer girl is way, way too much into games, not really able to function in the real world. Fellow gamers try to help her. Sometimes funny, sometimes deals with real issues with online gaming, but mostly a vehicle for jiggling boobs.

6: Kumamiko - Kuma = bear, miko = shrine maiden. The other "healing anime" of the season, it is the story of a middle school girl who is the miko at a remote village shrine, where bears are intelligent. It has its moments, both good and bad.

So the singer who was killed recently, turns out she was a Tokyo Ghoul fan. The original manga artist drew a tribute to her, which is kinda cool.

I have mentioned it before, but wanted to mention it again. Re: Zero is not just the best anime currently running, but may be the best of the past couple years. At times hilarious, at times cute, at times sad, at times incredibly dark and violent. Has a kinda Chaika, Coffin Princess/Scrapped Princess feel, but much, much darker and much deeper mysteries. Over the first couple episodes, the hero is violently killed by disembowelment a couple times. Things will get worse and more painful for him by several orders of magnitude. Do note that it takes 5 or 6 episodes to really get going, but once it does, it is incredible.

New season starting, and we have the first really good show: Izetta: The Last Witch. Set in an alternate Europe in 1939, it reminds me kinda of Full Metal Alchemist, except completely different. The princess of a Duchy that looks like Austria(but is called something else), is trying to get help from being invaded by a country not called Germany from a country not called Britain, but ends up captured, and then rescued by a witch who supposedly wiped out a whole company of not Germans. It is better than it sounds, and the princess looks like she is going to be an awesome heroine.

www, wagnaria is also good. If you like the original Working/Wagnaria anime, this is a spin off set in a different restaurant in the chain.

Finally getting caught up on the new season. If I don't mention a show, it sucked, didn't interest me, or I forgot it.

Sound: Euphonium 2: total, epic win. One of the most beautifully animated series I have seen. Be warned it is a little slow paced, and some people hate it, but those people don't know quality.

Flip Flappers: I dunno what I watched here, but it held my attention. Worth checking out.

Magical Girl Rising Project: wants to be Puella Magi Madoka Magicka, but it is really unlikely it can pull it off. That is not much of a knock tho, as Madoka Magicka is one of the greats. The show has the magical girl over the top cuteness, but then there was a brief shot of a field full of dismembered limbs...

Scortching Ping Pong Girls: K-On without the high budget animation, and with ping pong instead of guitars. Moe, moe, moe

Brave Witches: Strike Witches spinoff. Not as over the top fan servicy as Strike Witches, and the world is an interesting one(one of two series set in an alternate WW2 Europe). Thumbs up.

Keijo: holy Camel toes!!! Girl just out of high school enters training for a sport that consists of girls trying to knock each other off floating platforms using only their butts and boobs. So yeah, lots and lots of swimsuit covered camel toes, swimsuits hugging butts, adjusting swimsuit backs...and yet it actually has an interesting story, and a sense of humor, both things pure fan service series usually lack.

Last update for this season I think, just in case some one actually reads these...

March Comes In Like A Lion: Want to see what depression looks like? This show does a great job of it. Throw in some mood whiplash, and what might be an interesting story, and this show is great. Good look, great direction, hilarious at points.

Kiss Him, Not Me: be warned, the show is aimed at teenage girls, and the way the "fat girl" is handled was kinda not well done, but I enjoyed it. However, I really enjoy fujoshi characters(recommended reading the title in Japanese is Jujoshi Kanajo, Kanajo means girlfriend), so this worked for me.

Occultic;Nine: holy gag boobs. From the guy who brought you Steins;Gate and Robotics;Notes and one other whose name I forget, this is about the occult. Hard to tell for sure yet, but looks interesting, and great art. Since it is from the same guy who wrote Steins;Gate(which was ****ing awesome), I will keep on watching. But holy gag boobs!

Girlish Number: About a woman getting started as a voice actress in anime. Kinda like Shirobako, but more into the darker sides of the business. Decent look, good humor, awesome female lead.

Time for the quarterly new season report that no one reads!

Akiba's Trip: evil beings invade Akiba, taking over the bodies of people, and can only be defeated by having their clothing stripped off. Should suck, but actually kinda amusing at times. Nothing great, but ok.

Masamune-kun's Revenge: pudgy little boy is rejected by girl he likes, so he works out, gets ripped(and popular) by the time he is high school, and now sets out to get revenge on the girl who rejected him. Too early to call yet, but not bad so far.

Saga of Tanya the Evil: World War 1 re-imagined, with magicians. I dropped it after 1 episode, might regret it later as there was some interesting things, but relentlessly negative and with kinda ugly art.

Fuuka: If you have seen Suzuka, you have seen Fuuka. That is not really a bad thing as Suzuka was a decent romcom. Art and animation is alot better than Suzuka, and so far not so painfully slow paced as Suzuka was.

Interviews with Monster Girls: Best show of the season so far. Cute, funny, interesting look at the issues monster girls might go through. The Dullahan(think headless horseman, minus the horse) has to carry her head around, making carrying a book bag difficult, and even eating a challenge. The female teacher who is a succubus has to dress with as little skin showing as possible, avoiding physical contact carefully(any guy who accidentally touches her will get turned on, alot) and generally has a tough life. Kinda like Monster Musume, but without the fan service.

Gabriel DropOut: to graduate as a fully qualified angel, young angels have to spend a year attending school down on Earth. Gabriel was the top angel of her class, then when she came down she discovered MMOs, and that became her only interest. Fun show, lots of laughs.

Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid: Kobayashi is a woman programmer who, while drunk, ends up in the mountains, meets a dragon in human form. Offers to let her stay with her. Hilarity ensues. Silly premise, but well done and consistently funny.

KONOSUBA Season 2: Art is not as good as season 1, but other than that, still just as hilariously funny.

CHAOS;CHILD: Sequel to Chaos;Head, set several years later. Tries for that really unsettling, what is real and what isn't kinda feel the first few episodes of Chaos;Head had(until at the halfway point when it had revealed what was going on, and then was just kinda stupid). Hit or miss, but lots of potential. Same creative team as Steins;Gate, which was great, so hoping.

March Comes In Like A Lion: show is continuing from last season, and remains really good. Almost difficult to watch at times portrayal of depression.

Edit: lots of other shows this season, but either they did not interest me enough to watch any episodes, or what I did watch left me totally uninterested.

Edit 2: from Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid:

I tried hard to like Kill la Kill. I watched 15 episodes of it I think, and at times, it was great. Unfortunately, too many times it was over the top just to be over the top and got on my nerves.

I will say I loved Nonon Jakuzure:

I really liked Kill la Kill, particularly because it was so over the top. Then again, I really liked FLCL.

Haven't come across any anime forums as I am an anime buff. I'm curious to know everyone's opinion on favorite titles, genres, types of art or whatever. Or what tremendously sucks. I'm always searching for new anime to get into and like to stray from the terrible ones.

For instance: I lean more towards psychological and horror animes. Favorite titles would include Death Note, Mushi Shi, Baccano. The style of art found in those animes are beautiful.

And if anyone draws or has a deviantart page give a shout or share your work or deviantart URL.

And keeping with the political theme of this site, anime can be quite political. Anyone who has ever seen Hetalia can vouch for me. Comedic and controversial.

Boogiepop Phantom...it's in the psychological/"horror" genre, but it's really odd and hard to follow.

I know it was a well done show, but at my time of life, loud and obnoxious for it's own sake just does not really appeal to me.

Robotech is an old favorite of mine (yeah, yeah, I know it's a mash-up of 3 separate anime shows, fused together into 1 in order to have enough episodes to qualify for broadcast - but it was combined so well that I still like it)

Star Blazers tho~. It was cool because it was a cartoon, with a continuing plot from episode to episode, and I was just the right age to appreciate the story. And no one did as cool of explosions!

Yeah, I remember that show too - and the way each episode ended with "There are only [X] days left to save the Earth!"
Did give it a soap opera quality.

Around that time, I also watched and liked Battle of the Planets (Amercanized version of Gatchaman) -- good theme music by veteran music composer Hoyt Axton:
