The NFL revealed on Tuesday morning that it's ending its years-long exclusivity deal with Electronic Arts on football games. "Madden" will continue to be produced in partnership with the NFL, but the NFL is also working with 2K Sports — the company behind the smash-hit "NBA 2K" franchise.

That new arrangement encompasses a "multi-year" deal that includes "multiple future video games" — the first of which is expected to arrive next year, in 2021.

What glorious news! EA Games has been complacently riding this gravy train for far too long.

- NFL2k was (and still is) a superior game, so EA chased down this "exclusive rights" monopoly and artificially silenced legitimate competition instead of just producing a better product. The whole thing should have been thrown out in court over a decade ago.

- Charging $49.99 for what amounts to little more than an annual roster update and new UI themes. People hold their nose and buy it anyway because there is no real alternative.

- Removing features only to add them back years later (and in abbreviated form) under the guise of "new" features.

- Maximized focus on Ultimate Team micro-transactions while Franchise mode remains largely untouched like it's an afterthought.

- Repeated denials that DDA (Dynamic Difficulty Adjustment, or "Skynet Mode") exists in the game, somehow thinking that those of us who play a lot will eventually believe that we're just imagining things?

I could go on for days, but I'll just summarize: **** EA Games. This news made my whole day!

I bet the next Madden game is gonna kick allotta ass then. The sports video game industry is worse than call of duty rinse and repeat franchise.

This happens more than you think.

Remember Diablo 3? The game was fully created as an MMO and most the world was entirely created.

Then new management took over and completely gutted the game and peacemealed it for $$$$$$.

Got in a fight with the old team and wasnt able to use their game as it was.

Remade a ****ty barebones version that was just a number cruncher.

The new management team composed of about 4 people made INSANE AMOUNTS OF $$$$$$.

While all the people that genuinely poured their heart into that game LOST. (and the fans too)

I hate Madden football games. But EA will still keep selling it. In general, I hate EA because they buy up titles and IPs and then produce crap. But of course the NFL will now market to more companies as well. I'm not sure why they got into such a long-term exclusive deal with EA in the first place, it's better to be able to market out to several developers and get a variety of different sorts of games (like the old NFL Blitz games, lol).

the 2K franchise was, indeed, a superior product in every way. I look forward to seeing what kind of games the competition can throw together.

The one caveat to my excitement being that anyone entering the market would need to have years of stealth-designing an eventual competitor to Madden, otherwise we'll likely be two seasons away from a functioning product.
