Steam Summer Sale

Not sure how much this will help, but my go to starter race(with explanations of why):

They are the Hani, home system of Anuurn. They are lion people.

Traits:
Slow Learner(leaders will still reach level cap)
Sedentary(For a penalty, this ain't bad)
Adaptive(more planets to inhabit)
Industrious(minerals are life)

Ethics:
Xenophobe(for the starbase influence cost reduction, the sooner you can have multiple constructors out taking systems the better)
Egalitarian(more influence, for more starbases, plus consumer goods really cost alot mid to late game, so reducing those is good)
Pacifist(more resources, more core systems, both will help alot)

Oligarchic government(elections 20 years, so don't have to deal with it too often, and you can pick who you want to win...note, democratic has nice bonuses, so really good too)

Civics:
Mining guilds: more minerals
Functional architecture: Cheaper buildings makes minerals go further

There are alot of other ways you can go, some probably better(try the inward perfection civic, very interesting, very powerful depending on playstyle), but this will give you a good start. Get a second science ship going as soon as you can afford the new leader. As soon as you have a good pool of influence, get a second constructor going and expand like mad. Try to colonize one or two more large planets as soon as you can, then slow down colonizing a bit and let those colonies grow(every new planet colonized raises research cost and unity cost). First tradition should be Discovery(I think always). Then Adaptability, then Expansion. I like Interstellar Dominion as my first ascension ability, as it reduces influence cost of starbases again. Reddit is a good source on advice to fit your ships the best way.

Hopefully that is at least a little helpful.

Thank you very much. I'll definitely try these suggestions out, but I think I'll be sticking to the smallest/fastest games until I work out exactly how many ways I did the wrong thing.

Allright. I jumped on the Stellaris bandwagon just now. Haven't opened it. Have some work to get back to first....

Ive been playing it for about a week now. Very good, though I cant seem to figure out how to check out the tech tree, so I have no idea where the research is taking me. Also I dont like the realtime movement and combat- I would have preferred it to be turn based.

Yeah, I was wondering that too. Even though the research options are generated from a larger pool, it'd be nice to know exactly where I'm going.

Someone has probably worked it out and posted it on a website somewhere.

I basically run the game on fastest mode but constantly pause it to give orders. So it's still effectively turn based. This obviously wouldn't work in multiplayer, but I cannot imagine how that would work out. These games take a very long time.

Also of note: expect big changes coming to Stellaris. For an example, here is the planet summary screen for Earth at game start. Note the rather significant differences from current:

Wow, ok. It might just make sense for me to take a bit of a break and wait. Looks like some relearning. Of course, I can't tell what all the implications are, but there appears to be zoning, pop specializations, etc.

I like a good complex game, but it is possible to go overboard, at least for a casual/semi-casual player. Only so many hours in the day.

I would not wait. Enjoy the game, then enjoy the new one later. This will be the third major overhaul. Each version was good in it's way.

Getting frustrated with Stellaris. Every time you go to war you have to make a claim, casus beli, vassalage and all that- why cant they just simplify it? And the combat is pretty much automatic- its all whoever has got more ships and more firepower- no tactics at all.

Supposedly, it is starting June 21st. I usually pick up a good chunk of games during the sale. What are other people getting, and what recommendations do people have for games I should consider getting?

I know this threat is a little old but I'm tracking Monster Hunter World being released for PC in August and I'm hearing a lot of positive feedback on that game.

I haven't gotten there yet, but I've heard. (My first game involved many many hours of building up, only to pick a fight with Maurauders without knowing that they start out vastly in advance of you - as in, a few systems with 80k stacks' worth of ships - and got wiped out. The second....well I got distracted by other games for a bit and don't really have much free time for the next month).

I'll note this much. I saw that there were tons of mods in the steam workshop. I haven't looked in detail, but it's possible that people built mods addressing that in various ways.

It is kind of strange that you would need to make a claim. Here on Earth, the fact that wars of aggression are considered in violation of some 'international law' doesn't stop a country that doesn't give a **** from launching a war of aggression....

Im still on my first game. I went up against a high tech race too, but I folded pretty quickly when I realized just how powerful they were and lost 1 colony- they didnt seem to advance much further than that.

But then I entered an alliance with a few other races, then we got attacked by a bunch of a-holes so I placed my fleets on the offensive. The problem is that when you get attacked, you cant seem to set the war goals, theyre already set for you- so even though I've occupied the enemy homeworld, I had to give it back after peace was declared. Now all of a sudden theyre attacking again, and I dont have enough political points to claim their systems- which is just silly.

It is a Paradox games thing. That is just how the war system for their games has evolved. It works, but it takes time to really make sense of it all.

Well instead of making war a complex set of protocols, they could have spent all that programming time making a better diplomatic AI. Right now there are races that seem to hate you for no reason and they wont surrender even when you occupy their homeworlds and whooping their butts all over the place. I think its time I play another game.

That I agree with. Rather, haven't been there, but sounds like I'd agree with it. I'm probably going to end up searching to see if there's a mod that gets rid of the claim business/etc.

War is war.

ANother sale at steam, another chance to spend too much money. This week I picked up Breathedge(funny, but only good in small doses), Jurassic World Evolution(I am not decided yet if it is good or not, kinda worried about the mobile game feel to it, but ****ing dinosaurs man), and Frostpunk(awesome, disturbing, great look and aesthetics, but my computer kinda chugs running it).

I picked up a goodie but oldie package - Neverwinter Nights Enhanced and a bunch of other additional modules for it. My old NWN and NWN2 discs just don't play on modern OSX, sooo...they kinda got me with that. But I waited for the sale, so it would be about 70% off. Fifteen bucks or something for the lot.

For you Stellaris folks, check out the changes with the new patch/DLC:

This years sale starts today at 1 EST. Expect the biggest sale yet as Steam competes with the Epic store.

Has anyone played Monster Hunter World or ESO? Seriously considering those 2.

i just bought Dawn of Man a few weeks ago

really enjoying it....challenging

reminds of other city and civ building games which are my favorite types

For those looking for ideas, I know I come across of interesting ideas browsing the AGDQ and SGDQ playlists on YouTube. They date back to (I believe) 2014 and include games from all eras, all the way up to just-released titles.

The best part is that not only do you hear about each game, you can watch experts playing it and discussing it for as long as you want to get an idea of what it's like.

I have so many games on my rotation right now, I don't really know what I could possibly need...

Then again, I didn't get to 300 games in my Steam library by showing restraint during seasonal sales. I think I've probably played 30% of them for more than a few hours.
