Rediscovering games through mods

I've got a crap ton of Yellorium chickens, as well as a full ender I/0 farming station (15 x 15) with 15 layers of growth accelerators on every block producing yellorium from mystical agriculture for me. I put it all in the storage, and then use ender chests to move it to my reactors. The max size reactor goes through a lot of it, so I found I needed to expand production a couple times. Of course, now that I am using nether stars for power, I don't need any of it, and it's starting to pile up - over a million now....lol...

Cool to see you're a minecraft nerd, too, Kal. We don't seem to get along re: politics, but maybe you'd be interested in some minecraft? As people join the chat, thinking it might be fun to get a DP server going...? First rule: no politics.... hehe ;) lolz

Yeah, I'm a gamer and proud to say it. :D I actually do have a server of my own but I plan on really using it for youtube video's with my children and I playing games like minecraft and other survival type games like 7 days 2 die, subnautica etc etc. Just waiting until I can afford a proper gaming computer and a few other logistical pia things. If things go according to plan I should be all set up by March. Perhaps I'll invite some DP players to play with us then. :)

Edit PS: When gaming I'm highly against talking politics or religion or anything else so yeah, I definitely agree with that rule. ;)

Ha, right on... :) Keep me in mind. I'm looking at doing the YouTube thing too, we should chat.

7 Days to Die was a great game. I haven't picked it up in a while, but it seems with each release it has become less interesting to me. Been playing since Alpha 9 or 10, I believe.

What parts are you looking at for your gaming computer?

ATM the specs I'm looking to get is:

CPU: 10 core Intel Core i9-7900X
CPU Cooling: NZXT Kraken X52
Motherboard: X299 Motherboard
Graphics Card: NVIDIA 1080 Ti 11GB
Memory: 32GB (8GBx4) DDR4 (PC4 25600)
Hard Drive: 6TB 7200 RPM 3.5" Internal HDD
Solid State Drive: Samsung 960 Pro 512GB

A beast of a machine. :D Reason I want this one is so that I have a machine that will last for several years before requiring upgrades.

Yes, that's definitely a beast of a machine (with the price tag to match, I'm sure). In fact, I'd say you'd probably have parts fail before that computer becomes obsolete.

They're up to 11gb cards now?

Okay nobody laughs...
I'm still into CD-Rom games.

So it turns out that the answer to my modding question was in front of me all along.

For some odd reason the Twitch Modding tool (formerly Curse) has a default feature that locks any modpack you install, making it impossible to add mods to a modpack build the old fashioned way. I have been trying to build on to good modpacks for a while using various Modpacks on Twitch as the base, and they never showed any of the mods that I installed. Now I know why!

Now that I know what was happening it is super easy to build custom modpacks. All you need to do is go in to the profile options for the installed modpack in Twitch, unlock it, and you can then search Twitch mod database for compatible mods to add.

So that brings up a new question: If you were building your ideal modpack, what base modpack would you use, and what would you add?

My initial though was to build based off of Horizon III (if just because I like their hybrid biome that combines "Lost Cities" and "Biomes o' Plenty").

The only problem is that Horizons III is at 1.12, and a lot of the mods I want to use right now are still at 1.10.

I have decided to build from FTB Beyond 1.10, and add Genetics Reborn, Abilities, Lost Cities, Weapon Crates and Roguelike Dungeon mods.

I'd like to add Twilight Forrest mod as well, but I don't think that one has been updated in a while, and was dropped from the FTB base pack a while ago.

A little late to the party here, but I would absolutely be down for a DP server to play on. My friends are all too cool for Minecraft, apparently.

If this is purely a gaming machine, you should consider the 6-core 8700K and a Z370 motherboard. The i9 series is aimed more at a workstation market in the processor design, and this has some latency-related tradeoffs that do affect gaming performance. The 8700K actually outperforms the i9 series in virtually every gaming workload. If you're an overclocker, the gap becomes even wider as the i9 series starts to draw just stupid amounts of power when overclocked, and becomes rather difficult to keep cool. Speaking of which, you might want to consider the X62 if it fits your case. You're throwing goofy amounts of cash at a gaming machine, whats an extra 10 bucks for a little extra radiator space?

Addendum to the above: Only really relevant if you're using a higher refresh rate monitor. (100/120/144hz) If you're pairing up with a 4k/60hz monitor your GPU will be the bottleneck anyway so quite frankly your CPU wont matter much. And if you're still using a 1080p/60hz monitor with that beast of a system I will find you and slap you in the face with a medium-sized slab of sharp cheddar cheese.

The extra cores from the 7900X will mostly benefit you if you do some kind of video encoding/streaming for gaming, or if you also do other workstation things either for a job or a hobby. If it really is just "I want to play (insert latest AAA game) at ultra settings/high frame rates" then you should definitely check out benchmarks for the 8700K.

That kind of behavior really calls for Limburger :lamo

Yeah I built my gaming machine and then realized I had to fork out another $800 for a monitor to make it worth the money.

Here's my machine

How do you like the monitor? I've got the 100hz ultrawide (3440x1440). I like the ultrawide format but I'm tempted to try out higher refresh rates. Unfortunately the only upgrade at this resolution is the Alienware model, and $1000 to upgrade from 100hz to 120hz doesn't seem worthwhile.

Limburger is reserved for people connecting an XBox 360 to a 4k television.

I’ve got my SNES classic hooked up to my 4K tv, what sort of odiferous bludgeoning do I deserve?

Unless you have extraordinary eyesight most people can’t tell the difference or over 100. We are getting to the maximum resolution with the 8k monitor coming out. Once they make an 8k monitor with 120hz you’ll never need a new one again.

So I am having a bit of a Minecraft revival in my gaming time due to some mods, and was wondering what games (including Minecraft) you have rediscovered because of a given mod?

Have you played these?

Since Ive played all the new games I wanted to play, I went back and re-installed Skyrim again and added a whole bunch of mods.

My kid wanted to play, but as a kid, so I found a nice mod from the Skyrim Nexus that allows him to play just that. Of course he got scared after a few minutes so I had to take over lol. I forgot just how fun this game is, and I'm enjoying it- Skyrim is dated, but still totally superior to all the new games out there.

No, not yet. I watched an ill fated attempt by some Youtubers I watch to build a series on Drobnovian Knights, but that was as far as I got.
That's cool.
The only reason I mentioned them is because you said you are a solo player and these are perfect for that.
