i was thinking this morning about early computer games that i used to dig when i was a kid.
model : TRS 80
era : 1983ish
Oregon Trail
B52 Bomber*
*i can't find evidence that this game exists, so it might have been locally programmed. basically, you flew a monochrome pixellated plane over a monochrome pixellated city dropping pixels until the pixel buildings were gone or you ran out of fuel.
model : Tandy 1000
era : 1990 - 1993
Space Quest series
King's Quest series
model : CompuAdd 386
era : 1990 - 1994
Populous
Ween : The Prophecy (i think that i played this one on the 386, but probably also on my first Pentium.)
Wolfenstein 3D
the list is fairly long, but those are some of the the standouts. what are your favorites?
Blue max- commodore 64
Oregon trail apple 2- you died of dysentary
Oregon- apple 2- the original oregon trail, but you had to type bang fast as an animal crossed the screen because it was so archaic.
Uiltima series 1-7 - These were very in depth rpg games, except the first one which had almost no dialog and was created by a guy mashing star wars and dungeons and dragons into one game, but was groundbreaking for the 5150 ibm and the early apple two.
Ultima underworld- older than wolfenstein 3d, yet allows swimming, jumping, climing, and looking at different angles, as well as food and sleep management and weapon durability. This game lost to wolf 3d because even though it came out first, it required a 386 with extended memory, while wolf could run on an old 286 which many still had in 92.
doom- nuff said
Duke nukem 3d- best dos era fps
warcraft 2- the rest of the warcraft series can not hold a candle to it, seriously you can make seals explode by clicking on them too much
Diablo- early windows 95 game, by todays standards the game is very dated, but then it was groundbreaking. The best part was the music and the environment meshed together into a demonic feeling that made the game experience, later diablo games improved graphics and gameplay features, but that darkness in the atmosphere faded with it's sequals.
