So I see that Elite : Dangerous has hit XBONE and PS4. Being someone who really didn't think "No Man's Sky" was that bad of a game, E.D. seems to be 10X better.

Who's played it? What's your opinion? Is it worth getting?

I have a couple friends who say it is really really really good.

I personally am not interested in that kind of game, but from what I hear, if it's the genre you're into I would reccomend picking it up.

Really, the only problem I have with No Man's Sky is that it's a little "sterile." The only interaction you have with anything else is scripted, so that creates a false sense of immersion. The other day I saw a video where the guy flew by a Voyager probe in E.D. Nothing like that in No Man's Sky.

I thought about trying it, but it sounds like there are hours-long stretches of boredom interspersed with really intense encounters. ie, you spend hours going on a long route to a particular system, and then you notice someone following you for purposes of piracy, so you fight/etc.

I loved it on the Commodore 64. Not too interested in an MMO version, though.

Alright first off, the game is very heavy to get into. You need have a set idea on how you want to start out, either doing jobs, mining, mercenary work etc.

Its controls are "hectic" to say lightly. A game usually coming from the PC to console will suffer from too many buttons, and not enough mapping options. This one gets over it using a very intuitive, yet learning curve intensive layout that will take some getting used to.
The game does boast plenty of tutorial videos, and missions to help deal with its pretty large learning curve.

I currently get enough enjoyment out of mining, and raiding lone NPC pilots for credits. Though you can go total pirate against other players, almost to he same extent that you can with EvE online... Which does bring back some fond memories, to say the least.

The game is very impressive, and I suggest getting it, if only for about seven days from Gamestop just to check it out before returning it.

I did it right, and got the game with a HOTAS stick. The difference between the original controller and a HOTAS is beyond belief.

The first week, I felt like a pimple-faced momma's boy, locked in her basement. Played that damn game for hours and hours at a clip. There's a great zen-like relaxation to being a simple space trucker, just hauling stuff from system to system. I tried some of the more combat-based missions, and severely got my ass handed to me. I think I'll stick to space truckin'. Work my way up to being a tour guide and cashing in on some of that sweet, sweet tourist money.

I played mechwarrior 4 with one of those. Almost led to divorce!

I could never line up with those goddamn rotating space stations well. Once I got the HOTAS, I could book it through that mail slot, doing almost 200 whatever-the-hell-units-of-speed-they-use.

I stopped playing E/D because I couldn't drive the dam ship.

When I was in the navy, I got a HOTAS setup to play Wing Commander. Then I spent all my time trying to chase my roommate away from my computer...

Yeah, the combat is a bit one sided when it comes to more then 2-3 opponents, especially when its NPCs. They tend to roll their attacks together, and completely wreck your shield in one full go.
