Video Games: Your primary hobby?

Shiite! I live in SW Fl and my hobby is digging fossils in the peace river and drinking beer, but ima young'un, 36!

What dehydration? BEER!

What skin cancer? I'm 36!
Found a big horse tooth, today. And a couple brown bottle, bass!:drink

Aint done any video games in a long time, but beat Medal of honor on PS2, that Normandy thing was tough, moving inland? Even more so!

Well, to be honest now that I am OLD ( ;) ) and can't do many of the things I used to (PARRTTAY!), I do find myself playing P.C. games more and more.

I am not into most "video" games (weird, as I associate that term with the old video games one found in the Mall video game places) and haven't bought into the X-box generation...yet.

But unless geriatric medicine finally comes up with a true fountain of youth, I expect I will pick up on more of those sedentary pretenses at real activity as time goes by.

Don't worry about console. PC gaming is better.

Civilization; Total War (entire series); Europa Universalis (along with the other Paradox game lines); Master of Orion; Supreme Ruler 2020, etc.

You get Total War: Warhammer? Probably their best one yet as the different factions have entirely different play styles and units.

Being broke is also a lame excuse. Plenty is cheaper than a newish game.

False. Going out to eat at a sit-down restaurant one single night costs as much as a new game, more if you buy alcohol or go to a place higher quality than Chili's. Gaming is one of the cheapest forms of entertainment, bar none.

At this point I should probably consider collecting video games as my hobby rather than playing them lol. I've got about 80 games in my Steam library + the 5 or 6 Blizzard games but I barely have time in the week to get a few hours in for any of them. I would say reading has and always will be my main hobby. At least I get some time in my workday to do that.

Yes, video games are my primary hobby. At this point, they are also an escape mechanism into worlds that I can actually run, jump, shoot fire out my ass and lop off heads! Since my thing are RPG's, I can also enjoy creatively decorating my home to my own standards, knowing someone else will not wander in to drop piles of clutter on every flat surface. I can usually craft my own weapons and armor, choose my own path through various quest choices, and otherwise be in control of at least one small facet of my life for a few hours every week!

Good on your grandpa, lol, but not everyone has the options to jump on a treadmill or take a brisk walk outside. My personal comfort zone extends only as far as my oxygen tube, and required trips outside are frustrating, painful ordeals.

So I'm actually not the least bit ashamed of being a habitual gamer; I have been for nearly two decades, even before I became ill. My current loves are Dragon Age: Inquisition and Skyrim. I'd been breathlessly waiting for the new Mass Effect release, but the reviews of bugginess, complaints about inability to customize characters with faces that don't look cardboard have me kind of skittish about getting it until some significant patches are released. I haven't actually been able to learn much about the next Elder Scrolls release, but I sure hope one is on the drawing board!

Obviously if you're not physically able to do much else then what i said doesn't apply. Sorry i didn't make that clear

Couldn't agree more.

Console systems actually annoy me as they are effecting the quality of some PC games due to them designing them clunky for easy crossover to console controls (e.g. Skyrim).

Depends, when i was into gaming during the no-life high school years, i was burning thru one every few days

Pretty much every form of entertainment has a cheapskate option. I don't really include restaurants as "entertainment" either, and well, everyone needs to eat. If you've seen the movie "Good Will Hunting" they were all piss broke and still had fun. They even broke into a batting cage.

So say you go to a movie and bring in a flask instead of buy the outrageous concessions. That's pretty damn cheap. They even have free matinees here. Or you could just pirate whatever. Say you're a student with a free rec center membership. Say you join an IM sports team, that's free. Maybe you do a meetup at someone's house to play board games, that's a few bucks to bring a 6 pack. Maybe you go to a party, that's usually similar

And yeah, in theory you could stick to older video games or play a single endless subscription like warcraft, pretty cheap. And it also has the side effect of addiction

Definitely can have a side effect of addiction. A lot of games these days have decent replay or long single play through time. Getting days of playtime out of a game is now normal. Skyrim was released in 2011 and I have 552 hrs of play time. I think it was like $55 ish dollars when it came out. I don't know of much of anything that gets that kind of play value out of it it.

Further, there are numerous free to play games out there that run off of in-game purchases but they are not required to enjoy them. For example, Path of Exile is free to play and is a solid hack 'n slash game and I never felt the need to pay for any in-game purchases. A lot of phone app games are the same way.

I remember a guy working at Game Stop telling me PC gaming was dying. I just smiled. This was about ten years ago.

I'm more curious about what you said about BJJ, as I've been thinking about starting. How long have you been doing it? Would you recommend?

Done it since 2010 (had a few injuries that slowed me down). It is a wonderful way to stay active. Especially if you get in with a class of good guys. I always recommend giving it a try. The worst thing that happens is you don't like it. Lol.

Being indoors is the lamest excuse, sorry. If you *want* to play video games 4-5 hours a day, just admit that. If you want to not gain weight and you want other hobbies, there's plenty to do indoors. Like...go to the gym? Get a treadmill? Hell if you're really skilled, you could run a treadmill and play at the same time!

Being broke is also a lame excuse. Plenty is cheaper than a newish game.

My grandpa played on a pool team into his 70s. That's indoors. Go to meetups, whatever. Or play video games, but don't lie to yourself or others that you lack options

Ah. If only it were that simple. Indoor hobbies cost money. My PS4 cost money one time and I have 2 free to play games and 3 paid games. I used to have access to free hobbies when I was a college student, but now? This town doesn't really have anything interesting indoors when I'm off work. Believe me, I've looked. And it all would still cost money.

And a gym is great, but I don't have one I can pay for ATM. And that still only occupies me for a few hours. Anyway. Me and my girlfriend are now hitting up the springs more as we have gotten access to a canoe and so we can go to some cheap ones for a few hours. Nice on a hot summer day.

Like I said. Video games are a boredom cure for me. That is perfectly valid. A lot of the guys I play with do the same. Airsoft is their hobby. Mine is martial arts. :)

I've been going to the springs more now that I have a canoe. It has been nice. Gonna start taking my pups too.

More expensive. But better. Lol.

If console companies or PC companies could figure out how to properly handle the entire market...I wonder what would happen to gaming? Like if PC or part companies started putting out lower end machines that still played AAA titles at the same cost of a console? I mean sure when the console comes out that happens, but what about 3-4 years into console life? The console will still be getting AAA titles.

Oh well. I hope VR gets cheaper. That will be awesome.

Which ones, if I may ask? I kinda find any reason to be outdoors.

Well it really depends on where we are at for the weekend. Me and my girlfriend camp a lot. Recently we went to silver springs down near Ocala with some friends. It was a lot of fun. Did another one in that same area that we canoed on. I don't remember the name of it though. My friend lives in the area so he took us.

I was born and raised there, you are not allowed to fish on the Silver river, I did anyways. You can see the bass down to 30 ft, they eat whatever you throw at em, 2 10 pounders a day was the norm.

The second one you are referring to, may be juniper springs, just off SR 40.

That sounds about right. It was a river and people tubed on it too. I don't know that area really well. I was letting my buddy drive.

Pretty long, straight road about 15 miles out from silver springs. If you get the chance, definitely hit the rainbow river in Dunellen. About 17 miles west of Ocala.

Video games rank 4th in my list of hobbies, but its the one I do the most I suppose. From Mobile gaming in line or on the throne, to PC Gaming when I get home (used to be really into DayZ, right now its PUBG)

Racing and freestyle flying drones is my main hobby, I fly any day it isn't raining. Even if it is, I have tiny FPV drones to fly indoors. The 2nd hobby would be 3D Printing, only been at it for a few months but its changed everything, just check out what you can find on Thingiverse.com, press print and minutes/hours later its yours. Finally I rank marksmanship above gaming, although I only get to the range maybe once every other month.

Video gaming is what I do when I'm not doing anything else, or watching/reading something.

More expensive but you can do a whole lot more on a computer than just video gaming, which is where you make your value back, because you're going to need a computer regardless. So think of the cost as only what you would pay extra to get the high performance computer vs a normal one. For example, my laptop was $1,000. To get the same laptop but with lower performance was like $700 so I really only paid $300 over what I would have anyways.

You also have the desktop option, which is very cheap. You can also simply take parts out and upgrade them, as needed, and not replace the whole machine.

I'm fully expecting not to like it, lol. But I think that's part of the challenge for me; doing it anyway, even though I might be tapped out by a 120 pound girl lol.
I've heard about the injuries too, that's why I want to make sure I'm in as good of shape as possible before signing up. Working on that now.

The credo for newbies is ONE thing, "Tap early, tap often." I didn't tap early. I let myself get dragged around by a guy who was kickass...and ended up stupidly getting my knee hurt trying to be a tough guy.
