The new Zelda looks pretty sweet.. but, back when I was a gamer, Nintendo really got the shaft for RPGs. Square, Enix, Capcom, all developed the best RPGs for the Playstation console.

Is this still the same?

Here's a small list of the RPGs I've enjoyed, in no specific order:

FF7, FF Tactics, FF9, FFX, FFXI
Breath of Fire III
Legend of Dragoon
Wild Arms
Chrono Cross
Vagrant Story
Alundra
Star Ocean 2
Morrowind
Everquest

I like classic JRPGs, is the JRPG still alive? What console would you recommend for someone who cares about quality RPG game development?

If you are talking about the new consoles, PS4 by far. I have PS4 and Xbone and I can't think of a single RPG on the Xbone that is only available there. The only exclusives on Xbone these days seem to be shooters.

Persona 5 just came out for PS4 and its really good. If you like RPG's it's a pretty decent one. Then of course you have all of the JRPG's as well as the western ones that are being made today.

If you like JRPGs, then playstation or nintendo. I would go playstation so you can play the Atelier series.

Thanks for the input. I'm going to go with the PS4, it sounds like. As long as I don't get hooked on the Evercrack again.. we'll be ok.

PS2 all the way. Valkyrie profile, star ocean second story, Drakan, etc.

But, if you REALLY want to play the best RPGs....computer. Even a cheap one today can run Baldurs gate 1, 2, and lord of destruction. Neverwinter. Diablo 2. The list is long.

Damn I clicked in thinking we would talk about Russian anti-tank rocket launchers.... :(

Oh, and the Growlanser series.

And brigandine. And Ogre Battle.

Do you like classic turn based combat, or the fusion of real-time action adventure?

Both. I've played great games from both. FF tactics, classic turn based. I've probably played it through 30 times, lol. Growlanser, or Ogre Battle, real time, and I've played them a couple few times as well.

Skyrim is also great. Witcher 2, Bioshock, great games.

Sounds good, it's hard to choose between turn-based and real-time combat. For example, Fable 2 was a very enjoyable game, that melded action adventure elements with classic adventuring in a fantasy world. But, nothing can touch how compelling a game like Final Fantasy VII was. I think part of the charm is left back to the time period too.

I'm probably going to buy a PS4, sooner then later. The only thing I'm worried about, is how much time I'll waste. I'd almost rather learn a skill, like woodworking or something useful, then play 1000 hours of RPGs.

Just play after dark. It's what I do. I do hands on stuff (mainly work on cars) while its light out, and then game it up after dark, once the kids are in bed.

What character did you play? I played a Halfling, Rogue, the first time around, then a Dwarf, Cleric the next time,

Never actually reached Lv. 65 with either character, but, I got damn near close with my Rogue.

Then I played Shadowbane (short lived PVP based MMORPG), then FFXI, (rife with all manner of glitches and problems), before leaving the MMORPGs behind... this was all around the time EQ2 and WoW were coming out. I still have some of my old guild members on FB :).
