I think the Survival games have been done to death...but never in a way that really feels quite right. Like the balance is not quite right between grinding, PVE, PVP, and so on. Most of the games are fun at first but then fall into a boring rhythm. They quickly turn into grinders(minecraft survival). Or they turn into a death match sniper game (dayz).

So what I'm asking is does anyone know of any games that are well balanced between the elements of survival? The best experience I've ever had in one was a whitelisted server on dayz that was well modded. There were areas of the map that were only for base building (which was limited to a few cities marked on the map), then the rest was pretty much pvp. Sadly it fell apart because of a rift in the community and frequent ddos attacks.

I don't have a PC anymore, but I may be getting one. So a PS4 game or a PC game would be fine. I personally would to see something set in in the 1600-1700s in the new world. trade could reduce the grinding, and so on.

Minecraft is fun.

It doesn't exactly fit your requirements, but https://unknownworlds.com/subnautica/ is great.
It is a survival game, but futurist and on an alien ocean world.

Not much in the way of combat, but the atmosphere is both amazing and terrifying.

Ark: Survival Evolved is a pretty good game but joining a tribe is a must. Solo PvE is only possible up to a point. Besides, every multiplayer server I've tried is completely filled.

Don't Starve is and oldie and a goodie.

Lately I have been playing Skyrim with various mods that basically turn it into a survival game. You have to hunt and gather for food and find water to stay hydrated. Wear appropriate clothing for the weather and stay out of harsh elements. It has added a whole new level to the game. Now if I get caught in a blizzard I have to quickly get a camp fire going and set up a tent to get warm. And yes, you have to scavenge for kindling to get the fire going.

I really enjoyed Planetbase. It's a nice survival game where you land on a barren planet and immediately have to try and use your limited resources to set up an oxygen tent, solar power, and water collector before your air runs out. Then you build a cantina, and a food farm, and sleeping quarters before you starve.

Once you have the basics, you can start mining ore to refine into steel to build new replacement parts for your equipment. As you get more advanced, you build helper droids and a landing pad to get new ships with new crew members as engineers or botonists or medics, etc. You have to craft new medical supplies and entertainment for your residents. Then you start science projects and a telescope.

It's a true survival game. I certainly got my money's worth in playing hours.

Project Zomboid is pretty good, but to get full ROI, you need to play it with friends.

Also Space Station 13; probably my favourite game to date. Dwarf Fortress in space meets Mafia/Werewolf essentially:

I've been watching the videos. It seems awesome. I would love to play because it seems like their story is what will make it great.

Lots of crafting, the predatory creatures are very good.
Thalassophobia (fear of the ocean) inducing envrionment.

So are legos

Legos was fun when I was 5. But Minecraft is for mature adults. And 14 year old griefers and thieves that sound like girls on Teamspeak.

What? I'm pretty sure it's marketed at a younger audience

I really hope you like it.
There is a map online, if you have a hard time finding your way.

The deeper parts definitely instill thalassophobia in me.

Agreed. I played until I got the first sub and then lost interest for some reason, but it was an awesome experience nonetheless. Few things in gaming were as relieving and satisfying as the terrifying moments when my oxygen runs low and the lights from my base finally come into view.

As mentioned elsewhere in this sub-forum, Terraria and Crea and great side-scroller survival games. Terraria is probably the best geared towards PvP, though, because you can get ridiculously powerful in Crea, making game balance seem off in PvP where everyone is either a fellow super human, of a baby seal.

Have you tried Spore? It's missing the PvP aspect but it's pretty fun as a survival game and is very creative.

Side scrollers don't really do it for me anymore.
I've put subnautica on hold, just because I'm waiting for more updates, but I've invested a good deal of time into it.
Still haven't discovered everything.

I thought I was done with side-scrollers too. In fact, I think Terraria was when I finally wrote them off when I burned out on it. It turns out all I needed was a total conversion of Terraria. :)

Of course, after downloading it, I got busy, so not much time playing yet. I have discovered that the yellow mist is bad. In fact, I have discovered it alot. Starting to get some stuff gathered up and made, fins and O2 tank already make a world of difference.

The yellow mist comes from the seacow like things (can't remember their names).
Also, don't forget to scan creatures, scanning sometimes reveals certain things about them. *hint hint*

About to fire game up, and getting a scanner is top priority for today.

Just wondering something...it doesn't fall into your criteria but "survival games" makes me think of a very simple format of game that I've really enjoyed, which is Tower Defense games. Have you tried those? You basically just try to last as long as possible.
