Does anyone have an Oculus Rift VR?

As soon as I get the money I am going to be building myself a new rig. broadwell platform
going to put in the 1070. I would love to put in the 1080 but I can't afford it just too expensive.

not even going to consider the new titan that is just insane.

looking at 32 gigs of memory as well.

I've got to build a new pc my old one is just short of being good enough for VR I'm waiting for the new amd processor and the 1080 ti to come out though

Does VR even utilize the multithreading of the i7's? If not, there's little reason to favor i7 over a comparable i5 if budget is a concern.

No, and furthermore the extra cores on the 6800/6850 wont be much use either. A 6600k/6700k will often give you better gaming performance than their 6-core variants due to the higher single-thread performance. Few games are CPU-bound to begin with, and those that are don't generally benefit from >4 cores. Hopefully some day game developers will start properly utilizing 6/8/10 cores, but I don't expect that to happen for a while.

That said, the Kaby Lake processors are scheduled for Q1 2017, so waiting for the 7600k/7700k may be a good plan.

Oh, right. AMD is a thing. I always forget about them, they've been lagging behind so hard in the CPU game for years. I hope this next-gen processor of theirs competes properly.

I was a big amd fan back in the day but they were on par with intel.

Now they have fallen off the map. Not sure what happened but they simply can't compete.

I was wondering if the PC I built last year could handle a VR.

ASUS Z97A Mobo
Intel 4690K proccesor
32 Gig memory
ASUS Strix R9-390 w/ 8 gig onboard memory

Handles everything else fine

Also was wondering if the PS4 was worth the 500 buck invstment

Oculus has a test that you can run, so does Steam, it will score you on all you need processor and video card and memory and USB2 slots

Next year is going to be crazy.
There are two processors coming out.

Kaby lake x and sky lake x.

Both will not support windows 7 (microsofts doing)
They will also run on a new socket 2066.

Regular Kaby Lake also, if you want to call that a different chip. Which I would, since it's still on LGA1151.

The -X series have had lower clock speeds than their standard counterparts. More cores, but slower. Niche uses, like for people who want to play a game but also encode and stream it from the same machine. Not really worth the huge price increase for most people.

Some of the "enthusiast" chips are well over $1000 and I have no idea why a gamer would pay that much for a CPU.

It also gets into the pci lanes that are supported.
The 6700 chip is limited. So is the 6800

To get full pic lanes support you need a 6850.

I just can't justify the price.

I have always bought Intel but I needed to go a little cheaper since the video cards have become outrageously expensive. The new amd can beat the current Intel at half the price.

I'll probably switch when Intel gets a new chip but I want to start VR pretty soon.

hmm I will have to look into that closer.
more so if amd is going to pack 32 pcie lanes into their process for half the cost.
I find it interesting that it only clocks at 2.7 vs a standard 3.0 and you have to OC to 3.0.

I will wait and see the real world results. amd has a habit of overpromising.
not just a demo when actual testers get their hands on the processors.

you simply don't know what they did during the demo.

I used to upgrade my processor and motherboard every year, but, I just don't see the need as much anymore. The video card gets upgraded every year, and I am perfectly happy with it, I removed the 16 gig of memory I had in the system that was mismatched speed wise, (it was causing crashes) and put in a fresh, matched set of 32 gig. The only upgrades in the near future will be a larger SSD drive, and eventually a 4K monitor.

I work at home, and was just blessed with two really nice 27 inch monitors for my laptop, having 3 monitors lets me do my job so much better. And I just got a new laptop this week, but haven't opened it yet, I need to move tons of data over to it, and have the company do an automated setup to do it their way. It has 16 gig now, the old one craps out with 8 gig, as I have some stupendously large spreadsheets (some with 90,000 rows, some with 100 columns, and multiple tabs and Vlookups), and the low memory caused some errors...and time.

Unless you're running some crazy setup with SLI plus other devices, PCI lanes aren't going to be an issue.

*allegedly

It wouldn't be the first time AMD pulled benchmark shenanigans, scouring the library for the one situation in which their product beats its competitor. They did it with their latest GPU line when comparing to Nvidia's low-end products, found literally the one game they could outperform Nvidia due to driver issues. (and hid the fact that some of the graphics were not rendering correctly due to said driver issues)

As always, I'll be anxious to see the real world benchmarks run by independent reviewers. If AMD can compete, if nothing else we'll probably see some competition on price.

No seriously you don't need more PCI lanes.

No. I don't care about VR at all.

then why post?

Because I wanted too. VR is nothing but a gimmick like it was all the other times it came around and left again.

as usual you have nothing to add. opinion noted and dismissed.

It looks like you need a hint on why this idea fails over and over again.

At the moment most people simply don't have the PC hardware to support it and when they do they simply won't spend the extra money on the headset. The idea just doesn't offer enough for most people to care enough to put money towards it. I have the hardware to support it right now, but I will not put money towards some dumb headset that I don't want on my head.

No seriously you don't need more PCI lanes.

everything is using PCI lanes and on some mother boards you don't even get all the pci slots activated if you don't have the right processor.
if amd zen can use all pci slots on the MB and perform the same as the intel 6850 for half the cost
then AMD might be back in the circle.

if you want to use a 16x video card then an m2 drive you are out of luck unless you run both of them at 8x.

if you want to run both of them at 16x you need 32 lanes.

VR has extended out past the computer and into the mobile device world. google dreamcatcher and gear VR are on the market and doing fairly well.
for an el cheapo you even had google cardboard.

VR is for gamers they are not your typical computer user. they custom build their machines to be able to run the required hardware.

Doesn't even matter if it is for gamers. I'm a gamer that even works in the industry and I'm telling you that most gamers aren't going to care about this.

then go away and let the people that want to talk about it talk about it. as I said you have nothing to add to the conversation.

How am I stopping people from talking about it? If you want to talk about some niche market that won't even appeal to the majority of its target audience then go right ahead.

I don't do console. Consoles are obsolete on day one. I can always make my PC faster and better.

Also, the perspective and physics of console FPS games always seem distorted and otherwise off as compared to a computer FPS. (Nevermind the vastly improved performance when you're using keyboard + mouse, rather than something with only 8 or whatever buttons).

I ended up skipping out on waiting for AMD and built by my new PC with an i7-7700k and gtx 1080

I do almost all my gaming on PC.

I've seen some games that are solely native to Playstation that look extraordinary. I'm not invested in gaming enough to buy a console myself, but Uncharted 4 looked unbelievable. I'm just saying, I get the appeal.
